General Summary
The Medical Imaging Registered Nurse provides direct patient care to individuals, using nursing knowledge and skills through use of the nursing process. The Medical Imaging Registered Nurse functions independently within their scope of practice under the Missouri Board of Nursing in accordance with the Missouri Nurse Practice Act and hospital policies and procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Performs patient initial and ongoing assessments and medical history appropriate for the diagnosis and as indicated by the patient's condition, and with an understanding of the developmental needs of the population served.
Demonstrates critical thinking skills when assessing patient's needs and planning care.
Coordinates with the technologists and radiologists within the medical imaging department to provide and appropriately document IV access, contrast media usage (when necessary) and disease processes.
Provides quality nursing care including administration of medications, nursing intervention, and patient and family teaching. Can function as circulator and monitor during interventional procedures in the department. All actions are performed within the guidelines established in hospital policy and procedure. These actions will support quality outcomes and patient safety. Participates in quality monitoring activities as assigned by the department director or designee. Participates in process change to achieve quality outcomes.
Gives conscious sedation, peri-procedural pharmacologic agents and emergent medications safely and as needed, documenting as required by hospital policy and procedure.
Documents accurately and efficiently all patient care activities and required quality monitoring items to support the achievement of compliance with established quality measures (i.e. Core measures) Completes all required paperwork such as charts and daily logs, etc.
Communicates to physicians and appropriate team members pertinent patient information in order to improve patient outcomes and quality care.
Administers treatments according to physician order / protocol.
Will work closely with Breast Center Coordinator and be routinely scheduled to maintain skills and provide coverage when needed. Will be involved in patient scheduling, follow-up, and policy development as necessary.
Maintains exam rooms for necessary supplies and materials, ensures cleanliness, and prepares list of medical supplies needed.
Assist with the preprocedural preparation of patients in the medical imaging department (i.e. MRI screening forms, obtain creatinine i-stats, oral contrast administration, but not limited to).
Promotes collaboration and encourages team member contribution toward optimal patient care, while facilitating throughput to reduce wait times and prevent avoidable delays.
Continually triage and prioritize care, taking into account urgent and emergent cases or changes in patient condition that require a higher level of care or inpatient admission.
Education
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required, Bachelor of Science in nursing preferred.
Work Experience
Two years' experience as a registered nurse required. One year of imaging nursing experience preferred.
Certification / License
Current Missouri RN licensure or Compact State required.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support Support through the American Heart Association required.
Mental / Physical Requirements
Close mental and visual attention required for sustained periods of time, requiring goal directed, conceptual thinking and attention to detail. Frequently works under stressful conditions due to demands of customers and the critical condition of some patients. Must be able to transport self throughout department. Standing, walking, sitting, carrying / lifting (up to 35 lbs.), turning, carrying, pushing, pulling and stooping.
Working Conditions
Potential exposure to infectious diseases, disagreeable odors from patients, anesthetics, disinfectants, and / or chemicals and occasionally agitated patients. May be exposed to controlled radiation exposure.
