General Summary

  • The Registered Nurse (RN) provides direct patient care to patients using the nursing process, demonstrating clinical competence relevant to the area of nursing practice, Outpatient Infusion and adhering to the ANA Code of Ethics.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Follows established hospital policy regarding patient safety measures such as infection prevention, safe patient handling and movement, critical lab notification, etc., to ensure that patient care is provided in an optimally safe environment.
  • Provides quality nursing care, including medication administration, nursing intervention, and patient and family teaching. All actions are performed within the guidelines established in hospital policy and procedure. These actions will support quality outcomes and patient safety.
  • Performs initial and ongoing assessments in all aspects of patient care to monitor patient status, improve quality, enhance patient safety, and provide accurate information to healthcare team members.
  • Documents accurately and efficiently all patient care activities and required quality monitoring items to support the achievement of compliance with established quality measures (i.e., Core measures).
  • Communicates pertinent patient information to physicians and appropriate team members to physicians and appropriate team members to improve patient outcomes and quality care. Communicating to patient patients and family members promptly enhances the patient experience and promotes learning to support health care outcomes.
  • Delegates appropriately to team members while maintaining an atmosphere fostering teamwork and accountability. Demonstrates understanding of the dynamics of health care, adapting to change positively and professionally in an attempt to support the hospital mission, vision, and values. Incorporates critical thinking into his/her nursing practice and attempts to develop skills and abilities through continued education and various educational opportunities.
  • Schedules and manages the outpatient patient infusion census. Monitor appointments in advance to ensure insurance verification, white bag medications and pre-registration requirements are met.
  • Prepares patients for appointments by screening to determine the nature of the visit, obtaining the appropriate documentation from the provider, entering orders and charges, and sending orders to the appropriate ancillary departments.
  • Record pertinent physical assessment data and nursing interventions & explain procedures to patients.
  • Communicate with physicians/care providers regarding treatments, patient condition, and outcomes as needed.
  • Administers infusions and provides treatment according to policy (e.g., blood products, chemotherapy agents, VAD and central line accesses, and dressing changes).
  • Tracks data for outpatient infusion room volume and treatments/medications per month. Coordinates with Director of Medical Oncology for supply ordering.
  • Under supervision, participates in community outreach to promote Outpatient Infusion Room services and oncology education to the public.
  • Assist with other departmental duties as requested (i.e., payroll, QI monitoring)
  • Address all external orders; ensure that they have been transcribed, enter the therapy plan, contact the provider for any questions or if the order is lacking information
  • Ensure medications or treatments are ordered and available before patient appointment.

Education

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing preferred.

Work Experience

  • One year experience preferred.

Certification/License

  • Current RN license in the State of Missouri or Compact State required.
  • Missouri graduate nurses (GN) must obtain licensure within 90 days of graduation.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support required.

Mental/Physical Requirements

  • Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent exposure to infectious disease and hostile persons at times. Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids. Minimal physical discomfort.
