SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Social Studies Teacher


SUPERVISES: Directly supervises students assigned to his/her classes. Indirectly supervises all students.


JOB GOAL: To develop in each pupil an appreciation of American ideals and cultural heritage; to develop proficiency in the use of social studies inquiry skills and concepts; to motivate each pupil to understand and exercise his rights, privileges, and responsibilities as a citizen; to develop understanding of geographical, historical, cultural, and political factors which influence the development of world regions; to encourage pupils to develop sound opinions based on study of facts concerning operation of political and economic systems.


QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Possess valid Alabama Teacher’s Certificate

2. Proper endorsement in the instructional specialty in which assigned.

3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board might find appropriate and acceptable.


REPORTS TO: School Principal


SALARY: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach courses in social studies, history, geography, American government, political science, or humanities to secondary pupils, utilizing the state course of study and local curriculum and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law, administrative regulations, and procedures of the school district.
  • Develop knowledge of the purpose, structure, and operation of American governmental and economic system, and the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.
  • Make current material from the current information from a variety of sources available to pupils; plans and guides discussions of current problems against the background of the geographical environment and history of the area being studied.
  • Develop an understanding of the contributions of racial, religious, social and political groups to American culture.
  • Develop knowledge of political and economic systems of other nations and their influence on personal freedom, education, and living standards.
  • Encourage pupils to become aware of the complexity and interrelations of local, state, national, and world problems.
  • Develop standards for critical analysis through group discussions based on a variety of mass media.
  • Encourage pupils to think independently and to express original ideas.
  • Prepare written lesson plans with appropriate objectives and utilizes appropriate state standards, guides, task lists, etc.
  • Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional environment when required or requested to do under reasonable circumstances.
  • Sponsor student extracurricular organizations as requested.
  • Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students. Provides nine week and mid-nine week progress reports as well as keeping students and parents aware of at least weekly progress.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with others.
  • Assist the administration with and/or supervises entry and exit of students while providing supervision of the commons area as assigned.
  • In order to maximize student achievement, teachers should be able to assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives and student outcomes.
  • Develop and implement a program of instruction that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students and is consistent with local and state study and curriculum guides.
  • Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities which are compatible with the physical facility but serve the needs and capabilities of the students.
  • In order to provide a general environment conducive to the learning process , the teacher should be able to manage the behavior of learners in the classroom and participate in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school.
  • Continually assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes.
  • Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials which provide the student with the best learning opportunities.
  • Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods and curriculum.
  • Participate in professional growth and development activities including staff meetings, and inservice and staff development activities as required or assigned.
  • Assist in the documentation of student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports.
  • Ensure that the classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe and generally conducive to learning.
  • Perform such other duties and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the supervisor or Superintendent.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment of instructional specialty to which assigned.
  • Good knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade level assigned.
  • Good knowledge of the school's program of studies related to mission, goals and organization.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Ability to move around the room in order to monitor student work and behavior.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and peers.
  • Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  • Excellent human relations skills.
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, and parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. Occasionally the employee bends or twists at the neck more than the average person. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to push or lift up to 50 pounds such as boxes of books and TV/VCR carts. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being or work output of other people.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
