BUS MONITOR - GENERAL OR SPECIAL EDUCATION JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Bus Monitor
SUPERVISES: N/A
JOB GOAL: To provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the school district’s curricular and extracurricular program.
QUALIFICATIONS: As outlined below
REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor
SALARY: To be determined by the local Board of Education
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Possesses High School Diploma or equivalent.
2 Possesses valid state driver’s license with no prior convictions or violations.
3. Possess proof of a negative Department of Transportation drug test. Maintain a negative test result if chosen for testing. Can be chosen at random, because of reasonable suspicion, and / or post accident.
4. Attend all meetings and professional developments scheduled by the Transportation Supervisor.
5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
2. Maintains discipline when students are on the bus.
3. Reports undisciplined students to the bus driver or school administration.
4. Reports any safety concerns to the bus driver and Transportation Supervisor in a timely manner.
5. Assists in keeping the assigned bus clean.
6. Assists in keeping to the assigned schedule.
7. Check the bus to ensure all students are off before exiting the bus.
8. Discharges students to adults on emergency list only at authorized stops.
9. Assists in transporting only authorized students.
10. Assists students with safety restraints, wheelchairs, etc - for the purpose of ensuring the safety and well-being of students.
11. Assists in reporting accidents and in completing required reports.
12. Assists in enforcing regulations against smoking and eating on bus.
13. Performs such other responsibilities as may be assigned.
14. Monitor will be required to move around the interior of the bus while it is in motion to ensure student safety.
15. Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance
16. Assess potential emergency situations on the bus and within loading and unloading zones for the purpose of taking appropriate action to protect the well-being of passengers.
17. Attends meetings (e.g. Training, Mandated Alabama Department of Education, First Aid, CPR, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or conveying information to perform the job functions.
18. Monitors students with special needs until released to their teacher, paraprofessional, school based designee, parent, etc, for the purpose of enduring the student’s safety.
19. Must maintain confidentiality
20. Assist driver in completing required reports and maintaining accurate student time logs.
21. Actively assist students in evacuating the school bus in the event of an emergency/crisis
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to pass the department of transportation physical. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written forms.
Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit and occasionally to walk or stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee frequently repeats the same hand, arm or finger motion many times. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds, such as students. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and peripheral vision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees, and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public and other workers. The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you raise your voice to be heard.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Nine months. Other contract terms and salary to be established by the Board.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
