ENGLISH TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: English Teacher


SUPERVISES: Directly supervises students assigned to his/her classes. Indirectly supervises all students.


JOB GOAL: To develop in each pupil skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that are fundamental to good communication and literate citizenship to develop appreciation of good literature of all types; to motivate pupils to read widely for information and recreation; to develop standards for critical judgment of written and oral communications transmitted by mass media; to discover and develop special talents of pupils in the field of English.


QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Valid Alabama Teacher’s Certificate.

2. Proper Endorsement in Secondary English/Language Arts.

3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.


REPORTS TO: School Principal


SALARY: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach content and skills in one or more of the following: English Language, Literature, Composition, Reading, Speech, Drama, and Journalism to secondary pupils, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and the Alabama State Department of Education.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law, administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Adapt English materials and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge pupils.
  • Adapts the curriculum to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual pupil.
  • Develop standards for critical analysis through group discussions based on a variety of mass media, classical and contemporary literature.
  • Maintain an auditable record of pupil attendance and makes daily reports.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the classroom where several kinds of activities may be taking place simultaneously.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the time designated.
  • Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district.
  • Prepare written lesson plans with appropriate objectives and utilizes appropriate state standards, guides, tasks lists, etc.
  • Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Employ instruction methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate, and complete records as required by law, policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional environment when required or requested to do so under reasonable circumstances.
  • Attend and participate in faculty and other meetings as scheduled by administration.
  • Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives and methods.
  • Supervise student organizations as requested.
  • Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the board academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students. Provides quarterly and mid-quarterly week progress reports as well as keep parents and students aware of at least weekly progress.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with others.
  • Provide for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning. Meets at least minimum school district requirements for the annual number of inservice hours.
  • Assist the administration with and/or supervise entry and exit of students while providing supervision of the commons area as assigned.
  • Encourage pupils to think independently and to express original ideas.
  • Evaluate student progress on a regular basis as related to educational goals, objectives and desired student outcomes.
  • Develop and implement a program of instruction that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students that is consistent with local and state study and curriculum guides.
  • Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities which are compatible with the physical facility but serve the needs and capabilities of the students.
  • Continually communicate to students and parents (either in writing or verbally) instructional expectations, student progress or lack of progress.
  • Continually assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes.
  • Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials which provide the student with the best learning opportunities.
  • Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods and curriculum.
  • Assist in the documentation of student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports.
  • Ensure that the classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe and generally conducive to learning.
  • Assume other reasonable and equitable job-related duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment of instructional specialty to which assigned.
  • Good knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade level assigned.
  • Good knowledge of school’s program of studies related to mission, goals and organization.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Ability to move around the room in order to monitor student work and behavior.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and peers.
  • Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  • Excellent human relations skills.
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, and parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. Occasionally the employee bend or twist at the enck more than the average person. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to push or lift up to 50 pounds such as boxes of books and TV/VCR carts. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being or work output of other people.
