Employees function as the principal engineering resource in a central agency, or serve as the sole engineering expert in a specified discipline for a major engineering department. An employee in this class is responsible for planning and administering the technical aspects of major projects, determining how to incorporate new and improved technologies into processes, and, on a project basis, supervising subordinate engineering, architectural, and technical personnel and/or consultants, and reviewing and supervising production of designs, plans, specifications and contract documents. Reviews necessitate adherence to specialized engineering standards and governmental laws and regulations. Contact with project managers, engineers, various city officials and utility and regulatory agencies to coordinate and achieve assigned objectives is a significant aspect of the work. Work is performed under the direction of an engineering or administrative superior.
