Description

Position Summary:

A Director of Communications is responsible for managing and directing an organization's internal and external communications. Directors of Communications create communication strategies and may serve as the key spokesperson and media contact for the organization.

 

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manages strategy, innovation, advocacy tools for the Communication team.
  • Manage team resources to ensure appropriate support is available, this includes but is not limited to, work planning, attendance, performance, training, and staffing.
  • Executes solutions for problem areas, drives improvements and the resolution of road blocks, aligns with budgetary guidelines and strategic plans.
  • Predict immediate and future workforce needs to ensure appropriate support is available, this includes but is not limited to, work planning, program expansion, performance, training, and staffing. Proactively prepares for growth and aligns with budgetary guidelines.
  • Represent the Philabundance brand and mission through media releases, public speaking, written communication, and actions. Develops and manages usage of content, including stories, videos, press releases, etc.
  • Oversees content committee responsible for providing information about their initiatives for communications platforms.
  • Implements and maintain processes to track and manage department workflow and client requests.
  • Oversee collateral and branding materials to ensure consistency and brand standards
  • Manage various programs related to promotional materials, gifts, branding materials, etc.
  • Works closely with internal and Third-Party Events Coordinator to tabling/ event participation and seek speaking engagements to raise awareness of the organization
  • Identify and implement goals, objectives, and strategies for the Communication team
  • Establish a strategic communications plan, supported by internal and external, branding, communications and development and other Philabundance initiatives
  • Ensure consistent messaging and design across the organization
  • Leverage data and analytics to drive strategy
  • Oversee work with press that includes press conferences, pitching stories, and responding to requests
  • Establish, develop and mentor a high-performing team
  • Serve as primary developer of communications calendar and high-profile stewardship collateral including but not limited to annual report, brochures, presentations, and reports.
  • Identify trends, monitor current events and/or influencers to create engagement and stewardship opportunities on topics related to food insecurity
  • Oversee communications metrics and tracking to monitor content performance and inform content decision-making.
  • Manage relationships and contracts with vendors, contractors, and press
  • Support events and other special projects
  • Represent Philabundance in the community and act as a spokesperson for the organization
  • Responsible for supporting and aligning with Philabundance Cultural pillars. Ensure communications, actions and interactions reflect a focus on People, Professionalism, Partnerships, and Progress.

 

Additional Job Duties:

  • Work with key national and state partners, like Feeding America and Feeding Pennsylvania, on strategy, messaging, and implementation.
  • Develop and share messaging to promote our efforts to address root causes of hunger.
  • Assist with fundraising by helping with support letters or access to government funding.
  • Responsible for public speaking with small and large groups to ensure education, support and influence others on hunger related issues.
  • Provide guidance and support to the development of communications for advocacy campaigns, press releases, and other media interfacing related to key advocacy and education initiatives.
  • Represent Philabundance with external partners that are raising funds on our behalf; cooperate and make constructive input into their strategies to best align with the Philabundance brand as well as maximize revenue
  • Build an organization-wide program to take full advantage of volunteer skills and opportunities; recruit, train and retain volunteers
  • Working across the organization, create events to meet an array of needs, from donor stewardship events to network agency recognition events to corporate check presentations and much more.
  • Contribute to setting the annual revenue budget; manage the team’s overall finances.
  • Track and prepare reports relative to proposal and report deadlines.
  • Contribute to the overall team effort within the Development Department.
  • Handle other duties as requested by management. 

Qualifications


Education Achievement:

  • High School Diploma or GED required. Education or experience equal to a bachelor’s degree, minimum of 8 years direct experience in marketing, communications, public relations or related area of expertise.
  • Extended Degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Business, Social Services, or related topics a preferred.

 

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years, previous experience Managing marketing, Communications or Public Relations at a comparable level, non-profit preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a leadership role, ideally in corporate marketing and communications role.
  • Predict immediate and future workforce needs to ensure appropriate support is available, this includes but is not limited to, work planning, program expansion, performance, training, and staffing.
  • Strong project management skills with ability to conceive, plan, and execute a full spectrum of events, from donor packing shifts to fundraising galas to press conferences and more.
  • Must have strong financial knowledge with experience managing revenue and expense budgets.
  • Ability to work effectively with a range of people from different communities and different levels of seniority in the organization.
  • Previous experience developing and executing strategic business plans with a direct tie to revenue.
  • Advises senior leadership and the board of directors on strategic issues for Communication and Marketing.
  • Proven ability to build strategic and key relationships with a diverse cross section of contacts.
  • Proven writing, presentation, and verbal skills which aligned with corporate as well as non-corporate contacts.

 

Preferred:

  • Previous experience in non-profit industry with strong alignment with marketing, communication, and fund-raising support within activities, events and donor relations.

 

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational and communication skills which influence outside entities, guide a team with levels and provide executive team with necessary information on an ongoing basis.
  • Successful experience with problem solving and possesses ability to stay nimble in a fast-paced evolving environment.
  • Develops and executes strategic business plans and strategies. Advises senior leadership and the board of directors on strategic issues for Communication and Marketing.
  • Strong capability to create and manage budgets, leverage databases, produce timely reports, communication, analysis and present internally and externally. (Google, Microsoft suite, ppt, database exp. and Zoom/Teams)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to build strong relationships and work collaboratively with individuals and teams internally and externally.
  • An exceptional communicator, both in writing and orally; previous public speaking or teaching experience highly preferred. Ability to speak multiple languages a plus. Fluency with Spanish highly preferred.

Physical Demands:

  • Must have the ability to be available evenings, weekends and take on extended hours as business needs demand.
  • Up to 25% of travel is required. Must be willing and able to travel within and outside of the service area (employee can use public transportation, rideshare service, personal vehicle, or other means) Must be physically compatible with travel, office visits, events, and meetings. Must have valid driver’s license if using company vehicle.
  • Work in a seated position up to 8 hours a day, 5 days a week; Bend, stoop/squat, and walk intermittently throughout the day; Must be able to move up to 20 pounds. Shared supported lift is preferred, two people can move objects to lower impact. 
  • See, hear, and speak with sufficient capability to perform assigned tasks and maintain proper safety conditions.
  • Maintain an acceptable work pace and align with required personal and team deadlines. Must meet goals.
  • Demonstrate cognitive ability to:  provide direction as well as follow directions and routines, work independently with appropriate judgment, read words and numbers, concentrate, memorize, recall, identify logical connections and determine sequence of response, process proactively and identify near and long-term future needs as well as evaluate problems and escalate/inform management as is necessary.
  • Perform office tasks using simple hand grasp, fine hand manipulation, and reach associated with assigned tasks such as keying.
