Public Services Librarian

We are currently seeking to fill our Public Services Librarian position at the Georgia campus with a highly qualified and passionate individual.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Public Services Librarian provides management and leadership in all aspects of circulation, document delivery, access services, and collection management. They provide direct user assistance and reference support via in-person, email, phone or chat, and supervise two full-time staff members and student workers.

This position is responsible for ensuring a positive, user-centered customer service presence for faculty, staff and students. In addition to public service duties, the Public Services Librarian may act as a liaison to academic programs. The candidate must establish rapport and work collaboratively with library colleagues and campus-wide constituents including financial aid, student affairs, information technology, plant operations and the registrar.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful incumbent will perform the following duties, with or without reasonable accommodations :

Management of Public Services

  • Work with the library's Library Services Platform (LSP) : Run statistics / reports as needed, work with Systems Librarian to complete end of year processing and any upgrades, and work with vendor support to troubleshoot issues
  • Oversee the circulation desk, course reserves, stacks maintenance, and a variety of library technology
  • Manage study room reservations system, or equivalent manual process
  • Work with Public Services team across all campuses to ensure circulation desk hours of operation, and make needed adjustments for holidays, renovations and emergency closures
  • Compile usage statistics and generate reports as needed for library staff and leadership
  • Keep abreast of the physical condition of facilities within the library such as furniture, lighting, public computers, office equipment and printers
  • Serve as Chair of the Communications Committee
  • Participate in outreach and marketing of the library's resources
  • Maintain and update library digital signage
  • Work with library leadership and colleagues on all campuses to develop, document, and implement library policies and procedures
  • Assist with emergency preparedness
  • Coordinate with other departments on overlapping issues, including the Human Resources, Registrar, Admissions, Information Technology, Plant Operations and the Bursar

Supervision

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate two full-time employees and one part-time employee
  • Hire, train, supervise, and schedule staff of student workers who engage in circulation, reserve collection management, shelving, stack maintenance, and link checking
  • Complete payroll for student workers on a bi-weekly basis. Keep track of student worker's hours and work with Financial Aid Office to ensure library has student workers
  • Circulation

  • Use the Library Services Platform (LSP) to circulate items to patrons. Create and edit patron records as needed
  • Monitor availability and condition of value-added items such as chargers, headphones, and whiteboard markers
  • Order new and replacement items and office supplies through purchasing software
  • Oversee yearly inventory of main and reserve collections, conducting weeding as needed
  • Ensure reserve materials are current and older editions of textbooks are moved to the main collection or withdrawn
  • Have basic knowledge of cataloging
  • User Assistance and Reference Services

  • Answer questions related to all aspects of library operations via email, phone, chat, or in-person
  • Monitor library campus email as needed
  • Become an authority on mobile apps that are companions to the library's resources
  • Contribute content to the library's social media platforms
  • Occasional Additional Duties

  • May serve some liaison librarian functions
  • Provide general reference support for library users. Advise patrons on choice of resources, effective searching strategies, conduct literature reviews, etc.
  • Conduct orientation and educational sessions throughout the year
  • Develop user guides via Springshare LibGuides software
  • Stay active in respective liaison program(s); reach out to student groups, email students resource tips, and attend relevant departmental meetings
  • Participate in collection development
  • Provide input into library strategic planning
  • Remain active in one's own professional development
  • Participate in other duties as assigned by library leadership team
  • POSITION REQUIREMENTS

    Education and Experience

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited information science graduate program required with preferably 2 years of public or access services experience in an academic or public library
  • One year minimum of supervisory experience required
  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience with a modern Library Services Platform (LSP) such as Folio, WMS, Alma, etc. and discovery systems such as VuFind, EBSCO Discovery Service, or WorldCat Discovery
  • Strong service orientation
  • Knowledge of electronic resources, including content databases, Springshare software and expertise with associated mobile apps
  • Knowledge of print, electronic, and audio-visual formats
  • Excellent communication, situational awareness, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work respectfully with others.
