What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-time English Teacher (ESL) position at Philadelphia English Language Institute?
The part-time ESL instructor teaches in the Adult ESL program. This position includes 8 or 13 hours of integrated English language classes and 4 or 6 hours of preparation every week. Instructors may also be invited to tutor private students in addition to group classes.
Teaching activities include but are not limited to preparing for and conducting level-appropriate instruction, grading students’ work, and completing required paperwork (student attendance, performance, and course completion documentation). The specific duties and responsibilities are listed below:
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate in the Program Orientation event and other activities at the beginning of the term
- Teach one or two ESL courses at the assigned levels
- Conduct student needs analysis
- Develop lesson plans and make course curriculum adjustments to meet the students’ needs
- Assess students’ performance systematically and provide timely feedback
- Create a warm classroom environment conducive to learning
- Cooperate with program administrators and other instructors and provide peer support
- Check and respond to program email daily
- Submit the required student and course paperwork on time
- Track student attendance accurately
- Administer mid- and end-of-the-term student evaluation survey
- Participate in the Program’s events and activities (Program information sessions, holiday parties, etc.)
- Engage in professional development activities (at least one each semester)
- Attend semesterly teacher meetings
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director and Academic Coordinator
QUALIFICATIONS:
- EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- BA or MA degree in a relevant field and a completed TESOL, CELTA, TEFL, Pennsylvania ESL Program Specialist Certification or equivalent language teaching certificate
- At least three years of classroom experience teaching English to adults in the USA or abroad
- LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Native speaker proficiency in English
- Near-native language ability as proven by the English Proficiency test scores (TOEFL: 102; IELTS : 7; CPE: C; TOEIC: 270; Duolingo: 120.)
- Knowledge of foreign languages is preferred
- ADAPTABILITY:
- Ability and willingness to teach at various levels (basic to advanced), a variety of courses (test-preparation, business English) and work with learners of various ages
- PERSONAL QUALITIES:
- Ability to work well with people from different cultural backgrounds
- Skilled in identifying problems and brainstorming potential solutions
- Adaptable and flexible, able to adjust to the needs of individual learners
- Engaging, creative, and keen on making learning in the classroom productive and enjoyable
- ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS:
- Good time management skills
- Effective and timely lesson planning skills
- Ability to keep up-to-date and legible records
- Ability to effectively use technology in the classroom
- FLEXIBILITY: Able to reliably commute to Northeast Philadelphia and work either mornings or evenings.
ELIGIBILITY: US Passport or US work permit. A driver's license is an advantage.
