Compensation: $15–$20/hour, commensurate with experience (35–40 hours/week for 8 weeks)
I. Organizational Overview
Philadelphia Youth Basketball, Inc. (PYB), officially launched in June of 2015, is a community-built youth development and community empowerment organization that leverages the iconic game of basketball to help today’s urban youth overcome the most urgent and systemic issues facing underserved communities. A diverse and impassioned group of individuals, including leaders from the grass-roots to the tree-tops, have been working diligently to execute this mission by building an impactful program, a robust and sustainable organization, and ultimately our world-class Sixth Man Center to help uplift thousands of children, youth, and families for generations to come.

Position Summary
Coach-Mentors serve as the heart of PYB’s summer programming. This position supports the Lace Up and Learn Up (LULU) Summer Camp Series, a full-day youth development initiative for boys and girls entering grades 3–8. The camp integrates basketball skill development, academic enrichment, mentorship, and healthy meals. Coach-Mentors work alongside Head Coaches to deliver a positive, safe, and growth-oriented camp experience.
II. Core Work Scope & Responsibilities
- Our Coach-Mentors work closely with our Head Coaches to establish positive adult-youth relationships and ensure that participants have an enjoyable learning experience at camp.
- Reinforce the themes and tone of the Head Coach-Mentor throughout the duration of the camp experience.
- Conduct the basketball drilling stations, academic power hour, referee, and coach game play to make sure that participants are fully engaged, focused, learning on and off the court, and having fun.
- Coach middle school-aged boys and girls through a variety of basketball skill-development exercises and stations, and in some instances, develop your assigned skill-building station
- Embed the PYB Way Culture into every aspect of the camp experience
- Hold young people accountable for their words, actions, and behavior
- Give continuous feedback to Jr. Coach-mentors throughout the duration of camp
- Give continuous feedback to young people throughout the duration of camp
- Assist and ensure the collection of data required for program execution and reporting
- Actively attends and participate in a 30–45-minute weekly staff meeting
- Implement health and safety protocols as required
- Serve as a positive role model to the players, parents, and PYB’s community
- Collaborate with our facility teams to ensure a positive culture and climate in our Center
- Ability to commit to the full LULU season

IV. Training
Staff should be available the weeks of June 9th and June 16th, PYB will host a series of training sessions. Attendance is mandatory.
All summer staff members MUST possess or obtain necessary state and federal clearances prior to engaging in any hands-on activities with young people participating in Philadelphia Youth Basketball programs.
V. Compensation
This position will include wages of $15-20/hour commensurate with experience for up to 35-40 hours/week for 8 weeks beginning the end of June of 2025. Camp begins June 23 and runs through August 15, 2024. This is a seasonal position.
