Position Description
The Philadelphia Youth Sports Collaborative is partnering with Up2Us Sports and Street Soccer USA to support youth soccer programming in Southwest Philly. Up2Us Sports Coaches are AmeriCorps service members trained in how to use sports and coaching to inspire youth to achieve their potential and develop life skills that lead to success on and off the field.
This is a 7-month, part-time (~15 hours/week), paid service position intended to prepare Up2Us Sports Coaches for careers in the public and nonprofit youth sports, education, and social service sectors in Philadelphia. Up2Us Sports Coaches will participate in online training sessions, in-person networking events, and virtual career readiness workshops while coaching and completing supplemental coursework and career counseling online. In addition, Up2Us Sports Coaches will build their resumes by learning hard and soft skills and obtaining First Aid, CPR, Mandated Reporter, and other certifications required for part-time and full-time positions with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with a Program Director, Recreation Leader, and other youth soccer coaches to plan and implement both drop-in and team-based soccer programming for youth at James Finnegan Playground and Bartram High School, and at least one community event related to soccer and/or fitness
- Cultivate and sustain a safe and inclusive environment for youth, coaches, and community members
- Perform data collection activities to track attendance and monitor impact
- Attend mandatory in-person and online trainings, as assigned by PYSC and Up2Us Sports
- Maintain equipment and facilities, in partnership with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation staff
Qualifications
- Availability to lead and support 8-12U co-ed youth soccer practices on weeknights from 6:00 - 8:00 PM in Southwest Philadelphia through the end of the 2024-25 school year, with capacity to coach extended hours during the summer
- U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien, with possession of documents required for I-9 Employment Verification (necessary for AmeriCorps service)
- City of Philadelphia residency
- High school graduate, vocational school graduate, or GED
- Ability to pass a PA Childline Clearance, PA Criminal Background Check, and FBI Fingerprint Clearance, as provided by Up2Us Sports
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook Calendar
- Demonstrated ability to teach sports-specific skills and make connections between sport and life lessons
- Preferred: One year of paid experience conducting and/or instructing classes for groups of children in educational or recreational activities
Compensation
Up2Us Sports Coaches will receive a total stipend of $5,400, divided into bi-weekly payments. Successful completion of service requirements (minimum 450 hours, including all training, data collection, and service projects) will also earn Up2Us Sports Coaches a $1,956.35 AmeriCorps Segal Education Award.
