We’re seeking a seasoned mission driven and purpose led communicator to lead U.S. media relations efforts for Philip Morris International’s U.S. team. As a senior leader within the U.S. Corporate Communications team, you will develop and lead an external earned media strategy, manage communications efforts, extend existing and build new media relationships across multiple sectors to educate people on PMI’s U.S. mission.
The ideal candidate should have experience working in a fast-paced media environment directly with senior leaders or other high-level principals. Knowledge of and experience in a highly regulated industry, health care or the Food and Drug Administration would be valuable.
Your ‘day to day’:
- Lead a small team of purpose-led communications professionals to plan, evaluate, and operationalize the communications strategy aligned with the company’s mission to improve public health.
- Execute rapid response communications strategies, adjusting priorities to manage new and emerging special situations external to the organization.
- Provide communications counsel to the External Affairs and Scientific Engagement leadership team members.
- Write concise and compelling statements and QA and develop stories/content for different platforms (e.g., corporate website, social media) and thought leadership pieces.
- Pitch media, secure national, state and local television and radio appearances and interviews, advise executives for interviews and customize all briefing materials. Provide media training for executives, as needed.
- Function as a company spokesperson for different federal, state, and media other inquiries and be comfortable with on the record, off the record and on background conversations.
- Manage and supervise the Regulatory Communications team, providing clarity of roles and responsibilities as well as growth, development and engagement opportunities.
- Develop annual operating plan and budget, and quarterly forecast updates, in partnership with External Affairs team. Manage assignments for 3rd party agency and vendor teams.
- Maintain strong cross-functional relationships (Human Resources, Investor Relations, Government Affairs, site heads, Global Communications, etc.) to gain a deep understanding of the PMI’s business and culture and develop communications strategies.
Who we’re looking for:
- A bachelor’s degree in communications or public relations preferred.
- 20 years’ experience or an equivalent mix of education and experience in corporate or government communications.
- An exceptional writer (including AP style, grammar and punctuation) and presentation (oral and visual) skills, former speechwriter, etc.
- Bring existing relationships with business media to the table.
- Working knowledge of federal/state government affairs and the legislative process as well as background in political/corporate speechwriting would be a benefit.
- Fluency leveraging digital and traditional news trends, with a focus in political space.
- Willingness to take and provide constructive feedback up, down and laterally within the organization.
- Ability to process complex details and simplify them for average audiences in all forms of communications and media.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask and prioritize projects while working on a deadline within a challenging environment.
- Ability to manage budgets, including the forecasting of annual and quarterly projection, project management and planning.
Annual Base Salary Range: $273,800-365,000
