Position: PaleoLab Volunteer

Department: Paleontology Department

Reports to: Fossil Preparation Technician II

SUMMARY: PaleoLab Volunteers will have the opportunity to assist the Fossil Preparation Technician with the preparation, restoration, and conservation of fossil specimens within the PaleoLab for research and/or display. Preparation of fossils includes manual preparation, preparation with pneumatic tools and air-abrasion, the stabilization/consolidation of fossils with various solvent based adhesives, and the sorting of microvertebrate fossils. Conservation of fossil specimens involves the construction of proper archival housing for prepared fossils.

PaleoLab Volunteers may also be asked to engage and to interact with the public as part of open-door events. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, and minors require parental/guardian consent. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least 15 hours per month for a minimum of six months. Shifts are flexible and will be determined between the Fossil Preparation Technician and the PaleoLab Volunteer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the removal of matrix via various hand tools, pneumatic tools, and air-abrasion
  • Supporting the application of consolidants and adhesives to stabilize and reassemble fossils
  • Documenting methods and materials used in fossil preparation
  • Sorting of microvertebrate fossils
  • Helping with the construction of archival housing for prepared fossils
  • Ensuring proper use of PPE, safe use of power tools and safety compliance
  • Interacting with Frost Science visitors during open-door events
  • Maintaining a clean and safe working environment

Desired Skills And Abilities

  • An interest in the science of paleontology, geology, biology, and/or anatomy
  • Prior background, knowledge, or education in vertebrate paleontology, anatomy, geology, biology, chemistry, archeology, engineering, dentistry, or forensic science.
  • Skills in fabrication and/or sculpting

Training Requirement

  • All volunteers must complete a volunteer orientation tour with the Fossil Preparation Technician on-site in the PaleoLab.
  • Volunteers must also complete a structured training program led by the Fossil Preparation Technician.
  • Completion of the volunteer orientation tour and training program is a learning opportunity and does not guarantee placement in the PaleoLab.
  • Volunteers will be selected based on objective assessment criteria, including accuracy and quality in fossil handling, and placement is subject to museum needs.
  • If a volunteer is not selected, they are encouraged to explore other opportunities within Frost Science.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

This role involves standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods. Volunteers may occasionally lift up to 40 pounds. The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings, where volunteers may be exposed to sun, rain, or heat. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
