SCHEDULE:                       Full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with ½ hr. lunch.  12 months per year.  Schedule may vary according to departmental and Academy needs.

Position Purpose

Constructs, maintains, and repairs designated building hardware, woodwork, casework, cabinetry, brick, tile, stucco, stone, concrete surfaces, and various building systems.

Job Responsibilities

  • Utilize mobile devices and computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to receive, document, and complete work order requests.
  • Observing and reporting through the CMMS, defects, deterioration, and wear and tear on the facilities.
  • Cuts, shapes, and creates wooden components of high quality using hand and power tools.
  • Assembles, constructs, installs and repairs structures and fixtures in or on Academy buildings, including floors, walls, partitions, ceilings, molding, window sashes, form work, framing, blackboards, bulletin boards, doors and bookcases, furniture, counters, and roofs.
  • Installs and finishes drywall, ceiling and floor tiles, flooring, and other material for construction or renovation.
  • Installs and repairs architectural hardware, including hinges, latches, door closures, and locks.
  • Alters and repairs furniture or fixtures such as chairs, desks, cabinets, and bookcases.
  • Prepares records of material and time expended.
  • Sets up, adjusts, and cleans carpentry equipment.
  • Reads and interprets drawings, specifications, manufacturer’s instructions, and work orders.
  • Fabricates metal frames for screens and storm windows.
  • Paints and stains materials.
  • Cuts and lays brick, stone, tile, block, and refractory materials in various designs and shapes in buildings or structures.
  • Repairs and patches concrete, brick, stonework, rough plaster and stucco.
  • Uses equipment on various grits of sand and on brick, concrete, granite, marble, and slate.
  • Uses high pressure washer to clean masonry products and siding.
  • Cuts openings into various types of wall structures and enlarges existing openings.
  • Installs and repairs shower units, cork floor tile, and bituminous concrete pavers.
  • Performs structural framing including rough openings for doors and windows.
  • Mixes, pours, trowels, and cures cement, mortar, or plaster.
  • Removes snow and ice from roofs, gutters, and roof leaders.
  • Monitor and coordinate outside vendors as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

  • Must have general knowledge of all phases of building construction, codes, methods, tools, and equipment of the trade including wood materials and their properties, techniques of finishing sheetrock, plastering, and painting: proper glass cutting techniques; and proper wood turning techniques.

Position Requirements

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Trade or technical school graduate or equivalent preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in general carpentry required.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in finish carpentry required.
  • Experience in an institutional or campus setting
  • Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  1. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work and will require the ability to remain standing for extended periods of time, go up and down flights of steps, lift and push heavy objects as well as stoop, squat, bend, kneel, crouch, and lift.
  2. Ability to climb and operate equipment. Requires working off scaffolding, staging, bucket trucks, lifts, and ladders.
  3. Ability to lift and transport a minimum of 50lbs without assistance.
  4. Ability to work in confined areas and areas subject to extreme heat and cold temperatures.
  5. Ability to withstand exposure to inclement weather (rain, snow, sleet, freezing temperatures, etc.).

Additional Requirements

  1. Successfully complete a criminal background check (reviewed every 5 years).
  2. Clean Driving record (reviewed annually).
