Description

Position Summary

Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, the Classical Languages department seeks a full-time teaching intern to work with the department as a teacher of Latin. This is a one-year position, with a possibility of extension depending on staffing and enrollment needs. Candidates should be interested in being part of a collaborative group of teachers and working with highly motivated high school students in a diverse, mostly residential community.

Position Requirements

We are looking for a dynamic candidate who will be an active participant in the academic, athletic, co-curricular and residential programs at the Academy.

This position provides aspiring teachers the opportunity to work closely with a mentor and other experienced faculty members across campus. Enthusiasm for working with adolescents both inside and outside of the classroom is essential. Providing extra help, advising, working as dormitory faculty, and assisting with extracurricular activities are integral parts of the job.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Latin or Classics or Classical Languages required with a strong interest in education.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and to serving the needs of a diverse community.
  • Willingness to enforce all school policies and rules governing student behavior.

Accountabilities

While individual responsibilities will vary from one faculty position to another, the major job duties of all faculty interns include the following:

  • Teaching: Interns will work with experienced faculty, co-teaching and observing classes in the fall, then working with increasing independence in winter and spring trimesters. The number of courses assigned will be determined by enrollment and the successful candidate’s qualifications, including the possibility of an independently taught course in the fall. In keeping with the principles of our Harkness pedagogy, interns will observe and facilitate classes that generally take the form of student-centered discussions around a Harkness table. In order to meet the intellectual needs of the school’s talented and highly motivated students, teachers are expected to be dedicated to daily preparation for the best possible classes.
  • Cultural Competency: Interns are expected to demonstrate respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of Academy life.
  • Residential Life: Interns live in campus housing and play a critical role in cultivating Exeter’s community-centered student dormitory life. Interns are generally responsible for a minimum of one night of dormitory duty per week, and one weekend per month.
  • Extracurricular Activities: Interns are expected to participate in the school’s extracurricular activities (e.g. athletics, student clubs, community service, and the arts).

Additional Requirements

  • Criminal and driving background check.

Required Documents

To be considered applications must include the following documents (please upload as distinct documents):

  • CV or resume.
  • Transcript (official or unofficial) of courses taken and grades received.
  • Cover letter indicating how our Harkness teaching style, mission and values resonate with you.

Contact information for three professional references including one direct supervisor will be required at the finalist stage.

We encourage all interested applicants to review the Courses of Instruction available here: https://exeter.edu/academics/

The hiring committee will begin the application review process on March 24, 2025.
