Summary:
The Operating Engineer Apprentice is an entry-level position designed to provide on-the-job training and classroom development for individuals pursuing a career in heavy equipment operation. This role involves learning to operate various types of heavy machinery, adhering to safety protocols, and developing the technical and physical skills required for advancement into skilled operator positions.
This Apprenticeship will have step increases that will coincide with hours worked on the job.
Applicants that have prior experience will have the ability to take an exam to test out of certain levels and will be paid at the wage scale of their ability.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Operate heavy equipment under supervision, including bulldozers, excavators, and other machinery.
- Perform pre-use and post-use equipment inspections to ensure proper functioning and report any maintenance needs.
- Assist with site preparation, excavation, grading, and material movement tasks as assigned.
- Learn and follow all safety regulations and procedures to ensure compliance and a safe working environment.
- Develop skills to read and interpret site plans and follow work orders accurately.
- Coordinate equipment operations with team members and other activities on-site.
- Participate in classroom and on-the-job training programs designed to enhance skills in equipment operation, safety, and maintenance.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned to support the team and develop technical proficiency.
Requirements and Skills:
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to work flexible schedules, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
- Basic understanding of equipment operation and safety is preferred.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
Candidates that accept an offer of employment are required to undergo and successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination. This exam ensures that all potential employees meet the necessary health and fitness standards for the role. The examination includes a series of tests and evaluations conducted by a certified medical professional to assess overall physical health, identify any potential medical conditions that could interfere with job performance, and verify that the candidate is capable of safely performing the essential duties of the position.
Completion and clearance of this physical are mandatory steps in the hiring process.
