Perform routine public contact, safety work, teaching swimming lessons and aqua fit exercise classes, special event support in an indoor pool and classroom environment. These tasks are illustrative only and may include other related duties. Responsible to Supervisor and Aquatic Director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Teaches swimming lessons in the water to all ages according to a prescribed routine and curriculum. Creates and implements lesson plans
- Coordinate and teach aqua fit exercise classes.
- Monitors the use of the swimming pool, classrooms, locker rooms and other areas in the facility; enforces safety rules. Prevents accidents.
- Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as, but not limited to, setting up equipment, putting away equipment, minor maintenance and cleaning, and helping set up and support classes and events.
- Responds to public inquiries about aquatics programs and special events. Participating in parent/teacher conferences, safety day, and final day of celebration.
- Supports lesson program participant testing, participant swimming skills placement, and maintenance records and statistics for aquatics programs.
- Assists in implementing and supporting various aquatics competitions and facility rentals.
- Assists with maintenance of the swimming pools and equipment.
- Conforms with all safety rules and performs work in a safe manner.
- Adheres to School District policies.
- Delivers excellent customer service to diverse audiences.
- Maintains effective work relationships.
- Arrives to work, meetings, and other work-related functions on time and maintains regular job attendance.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience
- Minimum one year experience working and/or volunteering with children or equivalent education.
- Water Safety Instructor and/or Junior Water Safety Instructor education preferred.
- Previous water safety teaching experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to teach swimming lessons and/or aqua fit exercise classes and enforce safety and health regulations relating to an aquatics program.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally to a variety of audiences, to give and understand oral instructions.
- Good customer service skills and the ability to interact with groups of all ages.
- Ability to get along well with coworkers, the public, staff and volunteers and to maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to perform in emergency situations and in a challenging environment.
Special Requirements
- At least 16 years of age or older
- Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or Healthcare Provider certification required within six months of hire.
- Water Safety Instructor or equivalent education/experience required within one year of hire.
- Thorough knowledge of safe aquatic practices and ability to recognize potentially hazardous situations and/or practices.
- Working knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in an aquatics program.
- Work schedules may be irregular and change frequently based on operating needs. Frequent schedule changes that include early morning, late evenings, weekends and holiday shifts may be required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
In the performance of job duties, the employee is required to swim, dive, lift 60 pounds, bend, squat, reach, climb and crawl. Must be able to maneuver 100 pounds, work overhead, and safely walk on wet surfaces in a humid environment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to clearly hear, listen, speak and communicate with pool users and program participants. Employee is required to be able to appropriately demonstrate swimming and water safety skills.
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED:
In the performance of job duties, the employee is required to use pool-side equipment such as pool lifts and accessibility equipment, kickboards, masks, fins, snorkels, and various other aquatic teaching and support tools. Audio/visual and safety equipment may also be required.
WORK ENVIROMENT:
In the performance of the job duties, work is performed primarily in the water and around pool areas. The environment is frequently busy and noisy with interruptions and emergency conditions which require extreme care and concentration while performing duties. The employee is expected to be able to work in a variety of climate conditions, including hot, humid and wet environments. The employee will wear approved clothing, usually swimwear. The employee is frequently exposed to a variety of water treatment and pool cleaning chemicals. Due to being in chemically treated water, employees may experience eye, skin, and/or respiratory irritation. Exposure to cleaning agents, solvents, and other chemicals, including chlorine, can pose a slight health hazard if used improperly.
CONDITIONS/ SALARY: $15.20 per hour
