Phipps is offering a 16 week Ecological Studies in Urban Landscapes Internship to individuals who have preferably completed their undergraduate studies, and/or who are enrolled in a graduate-level program, interested in expanding their academic experience. This is a full-time, 40 hours/week internship running from mid-May through mid- September, working closely with Phipps’ Plant Ecologist and educators. Ideally, this intern will have taken courses in plant science/botany and have experience with plant identification using dichotomous keys and other references (e.g., The Plants of Pennsylvania, Wildflowers in the Field and Forest), preferably specific to the Northeastern region’s flora and fauna. This intern should also have experience working in excel, pertaining to data entry, organization, and analysis. Experience with statistical software R would be ideal but not required.
It is important to note that this internship will entail working outdoors long hours with exposure to the natural elements, surveying urban green spaces (e.g., meadows, lawns, and forests) for soil and plants. These activities will take place in nearby urban and suburban parks, such as South Park, North Park, Boyce Park, Schenley Park and Frick Park.
This intern will assist with outreach to public/professional groups, inquiring about their need of sustainable land care management and/or biodiversity conservation.
It is preferred that the intern have their own vehicle/reliable mode of transportation, though not required, as carpooling with Phipps’ staff is available as long as the intern has a reliable mode of transportation to Phipps Conservatory.
