ABOUT THIS POSITION
The Phoenix Fire Department is committed to providing the highest level of public safety services to our community. We protect lives and property through fire suppression, emergency medical and transportation services, disaster services, fire prevention, and public education.
The Fire Prevention Engineering Technician performs limited technical civil engineering work of average difficulty in the Fire Department - Fire Prevention division. This position will provide the public with explanations and interpretations of City ordinances, policies, and procedures, as well as assistance in completing a variety of City permit applications. Individuals in this classification have frequent contact with the public by phone, e-mail, written correspondence, and through counter duties. This position is responsible for answering telephone calls and relaying information or directing the caller to the appropriate persons for action, performing data entry and retrieval for staff and customers, providing customer referral or information service activities, updating daily logs, and verifying and entering information on fire permit applications to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to :
- Serves as staff support to Fire Prevention staff by tracking project status and serving as a liaison between the customer, answering incoming calls from the public and other agencies; data entry; and front desk coverage.
- Advises contractors and property owners regarding necessary permits needed for various projects.
- Reviews record drawing construction plans.
- Explains City ordinances and policies relating to plan review processing and inspections to the public, including answering questions concerning inspections and / or inspection results.
- Reviews less complex construction and project plans and researches data for experienced personnel who review the more complex plans.
- Conveys general engineering information regarding construction projects and projects to other employees, plan holders, and the public.
- Prepares and updates cash receipts and reconciliation.
- Demonstrates superior seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible activity.
