Position Summary
Chef Assistant is responsible for assisting with the cooking of the patron's meals. In addition, the Chef Assistant may do food preparation, clean, and wash dishes, as well as assist wherever needed in the kitchen/ dining room by Pi Beta Phi policies, procedures, and standards. Must have proficient knife skills, as well as up-to-date knowledge of cleanliness and food safety protocols. Set up workstations with all needed ingredients and cooking equipment. We are a Sorority House with frequently changing menus developed by our crew. We cook breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 577 sorority girls weekly. Our schedule is set by the University of Arkansas full academic calendar. Some late nights and weekends are required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Food preparation and execution as directed by Head Chef and/or Sous Chef
- Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen/dining room including but not limited to tables, shelves, grills, broilers, fryers, sauté burners, convection oven, flat top range, refrigeration equipment, and floors
- Wash all pots, pans, utensils, food preparation equipment, dishes, etc.
- Maintain a positive and professional approach with coworkers and patrons
- Maintain close communication with management in various forms including but not limited to phone calls, emails, and text messages.
- Stock supplies, such as food or utensils, in serving stations, cupboards, refrigerators, or salad bars.
- Assist in unloading and putting away truck deliveries
- Sort and remove the trash, placing it in designated pickup areas.
- Follow all policies laid out by Pi Beta Phi Kitchen Staff
- Prepare ingredients to use in cooking (chopping and peeling vegetables, cutting meat etc.)
- Cook food with various kitchen equipment
- Ensure great presentation by dressing dishes before they are served
- Keep a sanitized and orderly environment in the kitchen
- Ensure all food and other items are stored properly
- Check quality of ingredients
- Monitor stock and place orders when there are shortages
- able to lift 60 lbs from deliverers for inventory

Required Skills and Abilities:
- Familiar with the industry's best practices 3 years in a full-service restaurant or greek life food service as a prep/line cook
- May be required to hold a valid food handlers food ServSafe certification or sanitation certification (May vary based on state/county regulations)
- Three years of food service management experience required. Must be a self-motivated team player.
- Proven experience as cook
- Experience in using cutting tools, cookware, and bakeware
- Knowledge of various cooking procedures and methods (grilling, baking, boiling etc.)
- Ability to follow all sanitation procedures
- Ability to work in a team-environment
- Possess excellent attitude and personality
- Excellent communication skills
- Excellent physical condition and stamina
- High school diploma or equivalent; Diploma from a culinary school will be an advantage
Special Demands:
- The work environment can be loud and busy. There are many kitchen hazards such as hot surfaces and liquids, sharp knives, and slippery floors.
- Required to stand for long periods as well as walk, bend and stoop.
- Must be able to lift and/or move objects up to 60 pounds.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals
Job Type:
- Full-Time Monday-Friday 6:30am-2:30pm occasional late night and weekends
