Job Objectives   
     
The Certified Medicine Aide/ Certified Med Tech, under the supervision and direction of the Charge Nurse and/or staff nurse, administers routine oral and topical medications in accordance with Department of Health and Mental Hygiene regulations.  He/she is also responsible for providing direct care to patients.   
     
Job Standards   
     
1. Successful completion of a State of Maryland approved Certified Nursing Assistant/ Geriatric Nursing Assistant program.
2. Successful completion of the competency evaluation program required by the State of Maryland.
3. Must be listed on the Maryland State Registry and Board of Nursing.  Registration status must be current.
4. Able to read, write, speak and understand English and perform basic math.
5. Adhere to departmental dress code.   
6. Possess a current Certified Medicine Aide Certificate/ Certified Medicine Tech Certificate.   
     
Job Functions:  (* connotes essential function of the job)   
CMA/CMT
     
1. Prepare, administer, and chart routine oral and topical medications and suppositories in accordance with DHMH regulations and Pickersgill policies and procedures.  (See Pharmacy Policies and Procedures.).  May NOT administer injectables or medications via nasogastric tube.
2. Administer non-legend (non-prescription) drugs on prn basis; may administer legend prn drugs orally only after licensed nurse assesses patient and given permission to administer.
3. Know action, indications, proper dosage, side effects, interactions of all drugs being administered.
4. Make, record, and report to charge nurse observations relative to change in patient's condition or possible drug reaction.
5. Follow all procedures for administration of medications as outlined in Pharmacy Policies and Procedures, to ensure right drug to the right patient in right dose, at right time by the right route. 
6. CMT/CMA should be able to order medication refills from appropriate pharmacy in a timely manner.
7. CMT/CMA always uses 3 way check prior to administration.   
8. Maintain medicine carts in a neat, clean, orderly manner. 
 
Job Functions:  (* connotes essential function of the job)   
NURSING ASSISTANT
1. Provide personal hygiene including bathing, oral care, skin and nail care and hand washing.
2. Complete resident grooming including hair care, shaving, dressing 
3. and weighing.
4. Assist with resident toileting including bowel/bladder retraining & perineal care.
5. Bed making.
6. Perform and assist with resident mobility, transferring, ambulation, positioning and range of motion.
7. Use appropriate and safe body mechanics techniques when lifting 
8. and/or transferring residents or supplies.
9. Use aseptic technique for purpose of infection control.  This includes good hand washing techniques and infection control policies.
10. Carry out Universal Precaution procedures and isolation techniques.
11. Assist in orienting residents to room environment and routines upon admission and throughout stay as needed
12. Document accurately all care given, including dietary intake and output, temperature, weight, pulse and respiration, using the approved abbreviations and descriptive terms.
13. Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information and assure resident's rights & privacy are protected at all times.
14. Report to nurse on unit for written and verbal assignments which include daily use of care plans for assigned residents before initiating care.
15. Participate in the planning of resident care through shift reports and resident care staffing meetings when assigned.
16. Inform verbally and/or submit in writing any observations and changes in a resident for the licensed nurse to evaluate.
17. Serve residents their meals and motivate and assist them with intake
18. of nourishment and fluids.
19. Observe residents' dietary intake and report any changes to the nurse on the unit.
20. Answer all call signals and requests of residents immediately, whether or not you are assigned to that resident.
21. Encourage/assist residents in keeping their rooms clean & orderly.
22. Maintain nursing unit in a clean & orderly manner.
23. Escort residents to appointments and/or therapy departments as scheduled.
24. Participate in activity programs planned for residents as needed.
25. Attend & participate in unit nursing staff meetings, professional education programs and mandatory inservice.
26. Respond to resident emergency including bleeding, falls, seizures and performance of Heimlich Maneuver.
27. Assist with post-mortem care as assigned.
28. Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth and personal interest as well as calm environment throughout the facility.
29. Control anger.
30. Spend 80% of the work shift standing and/or moving about work area.
31. Carry trays, position residents, take pulses and temperature and other listed equipment. 
 
Work Setting/Environment
     
The Medicine Aide works inside the home where there is frequent exposure to blood, body tissues and other potentially infectious fluids.  There is some exposure to loud and unpleasant noise, dust and chemicals.  May be subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members or visitors.  Extensive contact with residents & staff.      
 
Equipment Used
     
Hoyer lift, adjustable beds, side rails, telephone, intercom, wheelchairs, gerichairs.   
 
Physical Requirements
     
1.Able to physically transfer, lift and/or assist residents with an average weight of 160 pounds.
2.Able to push residents in wheelchairs with a total weight of 250 pounds throughout the building.
3.Able to push and guide medicine cart with a total approximate weight of 200 pounds.
4.Able to walk, stop, twist, bend and squat.   
5.Able to read care plans, charts, directions, labels, thermometers and assess residents.
6.Able to discern colors on fire panel, warning labels and lights.   
7.Able to respond to residents' spoken and unspoken needs and emergency procedure instructions.
8.Able to deal with combative residents.   
9.Able to communicate and respond clearly on the telephone.
 
Mental Requirements
     
1.Able to concentrate on detail with frequent interruptions.
2.Able to follow, complete and remember daily requirements and routines over the 7 ½  hour shift or longer.
3.Able to remember and enact emergency procedures.   
4.Able to understand concepts of Geriatric care   
5.Able to comprehend and utilize professional education materials.   
6.Able to make independent decisions.    
7.Able to cope with the stress of the position. 
 
Hours of Work   
     
Seven and one-half hour shifts.  Will require every other weekend.  May be requested to stay beyond shift in an emergency.   
 
Refer to attached “Major Duties and Responsibilities” for annual evaluation.
     
Employee Responsibility in an Emergency:   
     
Able to respond to fire system and follow emergency procedures.  All employees need to respond to emergency situations immediately and capably for the safety of the residents and staff.  Must be able to walk stairs to evacuate residents.
