Job Description
Title: Quality Control Technician
Job Summary:
This position is responsible for executing the parameters of the Piedmont Metals of Burlington quality program. This is accomplished by understanding the company quality manual and preparing and executing all quality documents and forms for the Piedmont customer base. The job involves developing 1st article inspection documents, measuring all part dimensions, verifying part dimensions, angles, etc. are within provided tolerances, reporting deviations to production manager, and representing Piedmont Metals from time to time where root cause analyses are required to ensure customer satisfaction is achieved.
Essential Functions:
- Maintain Piedmont quality program standards and cooperate with production manager and shop floor operators to inspect produced sub-components and/or completed parts to specified tolerances
- Analyze customer drawings, develop 1st article inspection documents, consolidate measurements and/or testing data into quality report formats as directed by Piedmont and to meet customer expectations
- Perform measurements of parts using typical industry measuring devices such as, but not limited to, tape measure, calipers, square, angle finder, etc.
- Perform measurements of welded component parts, identify weld quality using industry standard visual recognition of conditions such as but not limited to undercut, start-stop location, under-sized welds, over-sized welds, weld length, etc.
- Verify sub-component part location, number and size of holes, cutouts, labeling and other part-specific items on a project-by-project basis.
- Prepare preliminary testing protocols for new parts
- Daily interaction with Piedmont team in production meetings, roundtable discussions, project planning and scheduling and other meetings as requested from time to time
- Work in conjunction with Production Management team to discuss job quality expectations as well as deviations and exceptions.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree (preferred) or commensurate sales / estimating experience in steel industry or contract manufacturing environment
- 1-3 years prior work experience in field or related area
- Detail oriented
- Technical and/or math aptitude
- Ability to read customer drawings and specification sheets/blueprints.
- Exceptional organizational skills
- Ability to work independently
- Strong written communication skills.
- Microsoft office software skills such as Outlook, Word and Excel
- Experience in welding, weld inspection (visual and non-destructive testing experience preferred)

Physical Requirements:
In a typical workday, employee is sitting, writing, talking and hearing, reaching; standing, bending, stooping; lifting weight of up to forty (40) lbs; walking through office, shop and yard as necessary to perform job requirements.
Working Environment:
Environment can be expected to be partially in the office environment but with significant time spent in the shop and/or yard area with exposure including but not limited to dust, dirt, heat, cold, high noise levels. Environment will be dependent upon the work order load, status of project, customer quality documentation requirements or other factors and may vary widely from time to time. Shop floor and yard area are unconditioned space, therefore exposure to climate variations should be expected.
