Job Description

Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) is a nonresidential two-year institution of higher education that serves Central Virginia – principally residents of the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. PVCC is one of 23 community colleges in Virginia that comprise the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). The scenic PVCC campus is located in Albemarle County, Virginia. Classes are also offered at the PVCC Eugene Giuseppe Center in Stanardsville (Greene County), the PVCC Jefferson School Center in downtown Charlottesville and at high school sites across the region. For more information, please visit: pvcc.edu
PVCC is known throughout the community and the Virginia Community College System for its exceptional faculty and staff, the quality of its programs and services, and the success of its students. PVCC welcomes, encourages, and supports the diversity of our students, faculty, and staff members and seeks to attract and retain individuals who reflect our diverse community.
Job Title: Writing Tutor
Department: Admin Learning Lab
Employment type: part-time (wage)
Work schedule: 29 hours or less per week, variable schedule

Overview: Through robust staff education, writing tutors collaborate with students to develop their writing across disciplines, as well as their skills in other subjects in the humanities taught at Piedmont Virginia Community College. Other subjects are based on the tutor’s academic background and comfort level. Writing tutors are also embedded in online and in-person courses in order to build connections with the Writing Center and to support students one-on-one, in small groups or whole class activities.

Duties and Responsibilities: Writing Center tutors work with students individually and in small groups on writing assignments; they may also work with students in foreign languages, humanities, and social sciences. Rather than teaching students, tutors collaborate with and model the thinking and processes (such as using course resources, working with others, asking questions, navigating the library, etc.) that can support success in their classes. Tutors document their work and participate in regular staff development (both online and in person). When they are not working with students, tutors engage in professional development, conducting research and developing resources to support student success at PVCC. Tutors also give and receive feedback, using this feedback to further develop their skills. Though this is an in-person position, tutors also work with students in Zoom during their shifts.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
