Pieper Veterinary is looking for a compassionate, skilled, and enthusiastic Avian Exotic Veterinary Technician to provide exceptional veterinary care for a diverse range of exotic animals, from reptiles to birds to small mammals at Pieper Memorial Veterinary Center located in Middletown CT.

About You:

We strongly believe that veterinary medicine is a team sport, and our preferred candidate is someone who feels the same. The ideal candidate will possess hands-on expertise in exotic animal husbandry, medical procedures, anesthesia monitoring, venipuncture, diagnostic imaging, and surgical assistance. We are seeking a skilled professional who is adept at providing comprehensive care to a variety of exotic species and can confidently perform these specialized tasks.



Other responsibilities include effective communication with both team members and clients, as well as confidently educating pet owners about their pets’ care and procedures. Experience with CPR, EzyVet and Smartflow are an additional plus, but not required. We highly value collaboration from all staff members, so please speak up, as your input is not only valued but can make a difference.



Anticipated Schedule:

Wednesday – Saturday – 8am-6pm

Some holidays are required.



Compensation:

Dependent upon education and experience – starting at $23.00-$27.00 an hour.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide nursing care for a wide variety of exotic species, including reptiles, birds, mammals, amphibians, and small wildlife.
  • Assist veterinarians in conducting physical exams, diagnostic procedures, surgeries, and treatments tailored to exotic species.
  • Administer anesthesia, monitor vital signs, and ensure proper care during surgeries and medical procedures.
  • Collect samples for lab tests (blood, urine, feces, etc.), and prepare samples.
  • Educate pet owners about the care, nutrition, and medical needs of exotic species. Provide guidance on routine maintenance, habitat enrichment, and health management.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, including patient history, diagnostic results, and treatment plans.
  • Prepare, administer, and monitor the effects of medications and treatments prescribed for exotic species.
  • Work alongside veterinarians, support staff, and clients to ensure the highest level of care for exotic animals.

Requirements
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with exotic animals, including reptiles, birds, and small mammals.
  • Experience in a veterinary practice with a focus on exotic species is highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in handling and caring for a variety of exotic species, with a strong understanding of their specific needs.
  • Knowledge of common diseases, treatments, and procedures specific to exotic animals.
  • Strong technical skills in anesthesia, radiography, blood work, and other diagnostic tools.
  • Excellent communication skills for working with clients and team members.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with a focus on patient care.
  • Skilled in time management with an understanding of the importance of table times
