This rewarding and vital position provides a broad range of services to unincorporated Pierce County.  Community Service Officers provide information to the public in order to assist them in problem resolution and to direct them to the appropriate Sheriff's Office and/or other resources, and to assist with public safety or enforcement activities such as abandoned vehicle and hulk removal.
  
Community Service Officers work either 5/8’s at the South Hill Precinct or 4/10’s at the Parkland-Spanaway Precinct depending on assignment. Shifts are Monday - Friday, primarily day shift with swing shifts, if necessary.  This is not a remote or hybrid position as employees are expected to work at their assigned precinct.

You will gain a broad knowledge of the office and have access to LinkedIn Learning to further your growth. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Direct people to the appropriate department units or appropriate services and facilities outside the office. 
  • Act as a liaison with residential and/or government entities to facilitate problem resolution of nuisance issues. 
  • Carry a limited commission to accomplish abandoned vehicle and hulk removal, disabled parking and other parking enforcement. Write citations for violation of local parking ordinances. 
  • Drive to locations of reported abandoned vehicles; determine whether the vehicles are on public property and facilitate the impound of vehicles. 
  • Write incident reports for various crimes as referenced in the approved list per the Letter of Understanding re: CSO Report Writing dated February 2019 and any subsequent updates. Reports are taken from citizens who walk in or call the Precinct and where no-scene evidence nor investigation are required. 
  • Maintain accurate documentation of phone messages left daily on the Abandoned Vehicle Hotline, requests from deputies, referrals from Pierce County Responds and various other sources. Prepare and disseminate quarterly reports. 
  • Monitor impound vehicles in the Precinct lot and coordinate release of vehicles with owners and tow companies.

  • A high school diploma or GED is required. 
  • Must be at least nineteen (19) years of age.
  • United States citizenship, lawful permanent resident or DACA recipient, and the ability to speak, read and write the English language as required by RCW 41.14.100 is required. 
  • Must have a valid Washington State driver's license at time of appointment and be able to provide proof of insurability.
  • Ability to successfully complete Pierce County Sheriff's Office background investigation, which will include, but is not limited to 
    • Reference Checks
    • Personal Interviews
    • Oral Board Interview
    • Polygraph Examination
    • Submission of Fingerprints
    • Work History Check
    • Criminal, Driving, and Financial History Checks
    • Post-Offer behavioral assessment
    • Post-Offer Medical Examination
ASSESSMENT PROCESS FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER:
  • After the closing date, qualified applicants will receive an email with a link to an experience and training assessment.  
  • Individuals attaining a passing score of 70% or higher on the Community Service Officer assessment will be placed on the Civil Service register in order of final score. 
  • VETERAN'S PREFERENCE / SCORING CRITERIA: Veteran's Scoring Criteria will be granted in accordance with RCW 41.04.  IF YOU ARE CLAIMING VETERAN'S SCORING CRITERIA, PLEASE ATTACH A COPY OF YOUR MILITARY "DD FORM 214 MEMBER- 4"* TO THE APPLICATION.
  • Candidates will be referred from the register to fill vacant positions occurring within one (1) year from the date the name is placed on the register.
  • All Sheriff Office employees serve a one (1) year probationary period.
