Are you tired of driving all over the state to work on remote jobs? In this position, you'll be working at Pierce County facilities supporting the security and safety of more than 3,500 employees and the public who visit our buildings. As a Facilities Maintenance Mechanic, you will directly support Pierce County Facilities throughout the County. You will perform regular maintenance, system checks, installations, troubleshooting, and repairs as part of a maintenance and security team.

You will need to provide great customer service for our tenants and prioritize work orders while building your knowledge in facilities trades. Have a positive and enthusiastic work presence. You will work both independently and as part of a team with opportunities to lead and assist experienced technicians and mechanics on various projects.

You will have journey-level experience as an EL06A Electrician.
 
Your Future in this Role:  

The facilities maintenance mechanic is the journey-level trades position within our building trades. The role of this employee goes beyond the day-to-day work order tasking and projects. As the mechanic, you set the example and the standards for the work accomplished for the other mechanics and the lower-skilled maintenance technicians and workers. You will be the key person in helping others develop their skills in the trades. This position has in the past been a source of personnel who have advanced to the Maintenance and Operations Supervisor 1 and 2 positions.

Training in this Role:
You will attend any required training necessary to maintain licenses. First aid and CPR, safety training. Training to keep current within the field or to gain knowledge in skills in support of Pierce County systems. Leadership and supervisor training is also available through external and County training classes to help hone your knowledge and prepare for advancement.
 
This position works 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday day shift with occasional evening and weekend work.

Core Daily Responsibilities:
  • This position performs journey level work including complete maintenance of facilities, fixtures, or structures including but not limited to liquid and heat transfer systems, control systems and preventative maintenance and other related mechanical and repair work. 
  • Performs advanced level electrical work and low voltage troubleshooting
    related to HVAC/R equipment. 
  • Works from verbal instruction, blueprints, schematic drawings or sketches.
  • Performs repair, maintenance, and troubleshoots on motors, fixtures,
    switches, HVAC equipment, fire and security and other low voltage systems and electrical equipment maintenance, repair, and construction projects.
  • Lead, train, provide direction, and instruct other employees as required.

Facilities Maintenance Mechanic Knowledge, Skills and Abilities for each position:
  • Perform other trade assignments such as plumbing, electrical, painting, or other related assignment. Instruct operating personnel in proper operating and maintenance methods and procedures.
  • Interpret designs, blueprints, and the engineering of projects. Draw scaled drawings and sketches, as needed with a full understanding of the requirements and scope of projects.
  • Draft project plans for building permits obtain building permits through local jurisdictions and coordinate inspections. 
  • Review work orders and projects prioritizing, planning, and coordinating work as needed. 
  • Lead project work and is responsible for determining solutions, means, and methods of repair, determining needed parts, materials, and supplies, and ordering same. 
  • Work with Facilities Management construction project managers and contractors in planning, scoping work, supporting, and/or performing work to drawings and specifications.

What We Do
The Maintenance and Operations Division:
  • Manage daily operations such as building cleaning, and grounds maintenance and a highly responsive and capable staff of building maintenance professionals performing repairs and monitoring building systems.
  • Manage preventative maintenance programs for major equipment and building components of facilities.
  • Perform renovations and equipment replacements which result in increased safety, security, efficiency, and productivity for our tenants.
  • Provide assistance and consulting services to building tenants for electrical, plumbing, carpentry, remodeling, and other tasks.
  • Ensure buildings meet safety, fire, and disability code requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Three or more years of journey level work experience in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning/ Refrigeration (HVAC/R) and related trade areas and provide adequate documentation of such.
  • Must possess EL06A Electrician License.
  • Additional training or experience may substitute for the recruitment requirements
  • Employees may be subject to 24-hour on-call availability.

  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Washington State Driver’s license.
  • Ability to successfully complete all required background investigations including fingerprinting. 
  •  Satisfactory physical condition is required as indicated by a County-approved physical examination.
