We are recruiting for knowledgeable and talented Journey Level Mechanics to join the Fleet Maintenance team.

Journey Level Mechanics at Pierce Transit work diligently to serve our community - providing efficiency, flexibility and a readiness to meet the evolving needs of our customers. This is the mission of our Fleet Department.

The individuals we are looking for are seasoned professionals with the experience and capability to step into a high performing team. They will have a reputation for keeping safety top of mind, showing a high level of reliability, and taking great pride in their work.

Regular duties in this role will include :

  • Providing preventative maintenance.
  • Troubleshooting and diagnosing issues.
  • Repairing natural gas, diesel, and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment.

All of Pierce Transit are required to participate in the Washington State Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Pierce Transit offers two Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) plans to choose from, and , as well as a matching program for 457 deferred compensation.

Employees are not covered under the Social Security System except for a 1.45% payment for Medicare.

Pierce Transit provides an ORCA Card benefit for each employee and a family member. This benefit provides free access to service on Pierce Transit, Sound Transit, Community Transit, Everett Transit, King County Metro, Kitsap Transit, Seattle Monorail, Seattle Streetcar, King County Water Taxi and Kitsap Foot Ferry.

Shift differential :

Employees are eligible for differential pay per the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), Local #758 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Tool Allowance :

  • Journey Level Mechanics and Mechanic Is are provided with an annual tool allowance of five hundred dollars ($500).
  • Certification Pay :

    Upon completion of the probationary period, employees will be eligible for certification pay subject to the following parameters :

  • An additional twenty-five cents ($.25) per hour will be paid to those who obtain and retain advanced technical skills through an Employer pre-approved ASE certification program. This pay shall be limited to a maximum of four (4) certifications / technical licenses per employee.
  • An additional two dollars ($2.00) per hour will be paid to employees obtaining a Master Level certification through an Employer pre-approved ASE master-level program.
  • It shall be the employee's responsibility to renew or otherwise keep current all certifications / technical licenses for which they are receiving this pay and regularly provide this information to the Employer.
  • PAID LEAVE :

    Full-time Pierce Transit employees are eligible to receive 11 paid holidays, 2 personal paid holidays, 12 days of sick leave, 12 vacation days per year, and the ability to earn up to 2 Wellness Days by participating in a qualifying wellness activity and the annual survey. Part-time employees, receive pro-rated leave, to include sick leave, vacation, personal holiday and holiday pay. Vacation leave accrual rates increase per the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.

    Essential Functions

    The following functions are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Diagnoses malfunctions and adjusts fuel, electrical, programmable logic controls (PLC's) and mechanical systems to specifications.
  • Repairs, adjusts, or replaces complete or integral parts of natural gas, diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, drive trains and differentials, and lubrication, cooling, exhaust after treatment, and air or hydraulic systems.
  • Removes, rebuilds, and replaces automatic transmissions in buses, trucks and automobiles.
  • Inspects, adjusts, troubleshoots, and repairs bus door operation, air-ride systems, steering systems, and wheelchair lifts.
  • Makes bus changes throughout the Pierce Transit service area.
  • Notifies the Fleet Assistant Manager, or delegate, of necessary repairs that had not previously been assigned.
  • Enters work order data on Agency personal computers and on handwritten work orders.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Knowledge of and skill in applying :

  • Methods, materials, tools, and standard practices related to the maintenance and repair of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
  • Principles of spark-ignited or diesel powered engines.
  • Safety precautions followed in heavy equipment repair shops
  • Skill in and ability to :

  • Use jacks, wrenches, grease guns, hydraulic hoists, cleaning materials and other tools and equipment used in the service and repair of heavy equipment.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Work with other employees in a directed work team environment.
  • Conceptualize required work through personal observation or a verbal description and determine what is necessary to obtain quality results.
  • Perform computerized work order procedures.
  • Pass a job-related examination; pass federally required drug and alcohol testing.
  • Drive all job-related vehicles and maintain a valid Washington State driver's license and CDL as required.
  • Minimum Qualifications :

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old;
  • Candidates must meet at least one of the following :

  • Three (3) years of journey-level mechanical work experience in transit, bus, or over-the-road coach maintenance. Experience must include at least one year of heavy duty diesel mechanic work experience or alternative fueled spark ignited engines. OR
  • Completion of a two (2) year diesel mechanic vocational course of study plus two (2) years journey-level mechanical work; OR
  • Certification as a diesel mechanic by a private or public agency recognized by Pierce Transit; OR
  • Completion of a four (4) year diesel mechanic apprentice program.
  • License Requirements :

  • Must possess a valid Washington State driver license at time of application, with maintenance thereafter. Must obtain a Class B Commercial License Permit (CLP) prior to hire and successfully obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with air brake and passenger endorsement within ninety (90) days of hire, with maintenance thereafter. Must maintain acceptable driving record throughout employment.
  • No CDL? No problem! Pierce Transit will pay YOU to get your Class B CDL on-site with some of the best driving instructors in the industry!
  • Special Requirements :

  • Please note : In order to obtain a Commercial License Permit in Washington State, you must be able to provide your current license, Social Security number and proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residency.
  • Must be willing to work any shift (assignment to swing shift, graveyard and / or weekends likely).
  • Must have the ability to perform the essential functions as described above including the ability to maneuver objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must possess a complete set of heavy equipment tools and a roll-a-way tool box necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Desired :

  • Journey level mechanical work experience on natural gas or propane-powered spark-ignited vehicles or equipment.
  • Experience acquired at a heavy duty truck or equipment dealership is highly desired.
  • IMPORTANT INFORMATION :

    Pierce Transit reserves the right to under fill this position with a Mechanic I if we are not successful in identifying a candidate with sufficient qualifications to meet the requirements of the journey level classification. Those hired at the Mechanic I classification will be given on-the-job training with the end goal of achieving Journey Level Mechanic standing.
