Description :
The Piggly Wiggly Alabama Distributing Company in Bessemer, AL is seeking Class-A CDL drivers to make deliveries to stores throughout the Southeast. This is an overnight driving position with loads going out between 8pm and 6am each night and returning to the warehouse after the deliveries are made. Drivers are home most nights. Drivers are guaranteed a 40-hour minimum each week and typically average between 45 and 55 hours per week.
The CDL Class A truck driver is responsible for safely operating a commercial truck with trailer to transport goods from one destination to another. They drive routes of various distances while adhering to strict federal and state regulations governing commercial vehicle operation. This includes following hours of service limits, maintaining vehicle safety standards, and ensuring compliance with rest periods and other driver safety protocols. Additionally, truck drivers must maintain a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) and up to date medical card. They are trained in safe driving practices annually. In addition to safe delivery to the destination, the driver must also handle loading and unloading, inspecting cargo for damage, and completing necessary paperwork.
Requirements :
Must possess and maintain a valid Class-A CDL.
The pay rate of $24 per hour may be reduced for candidates with less than 6months of CDL Class A driving experience.
At least 21 years of age.
A safe driving record.
Some delivery locations require the driver to unload their own trucks.
Some routes may require a driver to lay-over due to hours of service. In the event of a lay-over, the company will provide a hotel room and reimbursement of $25 for meals.
Candidates must live within a 1-hour driving radius of our warehouse.
Duties :
Drives truck to destination.
Prepares receipts for load picked up.
Collects payment for goods delivered and for delivery charges.
Maintains truck log, according to state and federal regulations.
Maintains telephone or radio contact with supervisor to receive delivery instructions.
Loads and unloads truck.
Inspects truck equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil, and water.
Performs emergency roadside repairs such as changing tires, installing light bulbs, tire chains, and spark plugs.
Positions blocks and ties rope around items to secure cargo during transit.
Maintain a clean driving record.
Strong knowledge of traffic laws and safety regulations.
Great navigational and map reading skills.
Skills / Abilities :
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and motor coordination.
Fast reaction time.
Customer service oriented.
A willingness to learn, take initiative, and eventually work on their own.
Accepts a consistent work schedule but also has the flexibility of being an on-call delivery driver.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Must be able to follow directions.
Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet ETAs (estimated time of arrival).
Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
Education, Certifications, and Experience :
The CDL Class A Driver must have obtained a valid Commercial Driver’s License – Class A and keep it current. If obtained in another state, the driver must convert the license to the State of Alabama within thirty (30) days of hire. Any newly hired driver with less than 6 months of verifiable experience must successfully complete our six-week on-the-job training (at a reduced pay rate).
A driver must have basic computer usage skills to perform this job successfully. An individual should be able to operate an electronic logging device (ELD), use inventory software, email, and the internet.

The employee must frequently lift up to 90 lbs.
