Pikes Peak Media Company is looking for a seasoned copyeditor for the Colorado Springs Independent and the Colorado Springs Business Journal.
This position is a hybrid with at least 2 days in office.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Review and edit articles, features, and all written content for grammar, punctuation, style, clarity, and accuracy in accordance with the publication's editorial guidelines (e.g., AP Style, Chicago Manual).
- Ensure consistency in tone, voice, and terminology across various pieces and sections of the publication.
- Collaborate closely with writers, reporters, editors, and design teams to refine content while preserving the author’s intent and editorial standards.
- Fact-check names, dates, statistics, and other critical information to maintain the credibility and integrity of the publication.
- Review headlines, photo captions, pull quotes, and other editorial elements for correctness and engagement.
- Proofread final layouts and digital content before publication to catch typographical or formatting errors.
- Track and manage editorial workflow and deadlines, ensuring timely delivery of edited content.
- Provide constructive editorial feedback to writers and contribute to improving editorial processes and quality standards.
- Stay current on language trends, style guides, industry terminology, and evolving best practices in journalism and publishing.
- Uphold high standards of editorial integrity, ensuring content meets ethical and legal compliance standards (e.g., plagiarism checks, libel review).
WHAT SETS YOU APART?
We’re looking for someone with three (3) or more years of experience who excels at quick turnaround. A successful candidate will be a master at AP .
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey stories clearly and accurately to their audience.
- Time management skills to handle multiple stories, meet tight deadlines, and adapt to breaking news situations.
- Critical thinking skills to analyze and interpret information, discern fact from opinion, and present complex issues in an understandable way.
- Awareness of ethical journalism standards and legal boundaries, ensuring all content is fair, accurate and legal.
- Knowledge of various recording and editing software platforms for news gathering and content production
- The ability to find unique angles on trending stories
The salary range for this position at Pikes Peak Media Company is $25/hr - $35/hr.
The base pay salary is a calculated industry-based estimate and is what the Pikes Peak Media Company may pay for anyone seated in this position throughout their tenure at our company. This estimated range of $25/hr - $35/hr._range is based on a number of factors including but not limited to market location, job-related knowledge, education or training, skills, and years and types of experience._
