Job Summary: The Organic Hydroponic Farm Operator will be responsible for conducting all relevant day-to-day operations of the hydroponic farming system at Pilgrim’s Market. This individual will ensure that crops are grown efficiently, sustainably, and to the highest organic standards. The ideal candidate will have a passion for organic agriculture, experience in hydroponic systems, and a dedication to producing fresh, high-quality produce.
Key Responsibilities:
- Hydroponic System Maintenance:
- Operate and maintain the hydroponic farming systems, ensuring they are running smoothly and efficiently.
- Regularly check and adjust water, nutrient, and pH levels to optimize plant growth.
- Monitor and troubleshoot system components such as pumps, lights, fans, and air systems.
- Crop Management:
- Plant, prune, harvest, and monitor organic crops in the hydroponic system.
- Ensure proper crop rotation, pest management, and disease prevention, following organic practices.
- Monitor plant growth and development, adjusting environmental variables such as light, temperature, and humidity.
- Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate records of crop growth, nutrient solutions, and system maintenance.
- Track harvest cycles, inventory, and product quality to ensure the best possible yield and efficiency.
- Report regularly to the Farm Manager on system performance, crop health, and any issues or concerns.
- Environmental Practices:
- Follow organic certification guidelines and practices, ensuring compliance with organic farming standards.
- Contribute to Pilgrim’s Market’s sustainability efforts by minimizing waste, energy use, and water consumption.
- Collaboration and Training:
- Work closely with other farm team members, sharing knowledge and insights on sustainable farming practices.
- Assist in training new team members or interns in hydroponic farming techniques and practices.
- General Farm Operations:
- Assist in the daily tasks of maintaining the farm, including cleaning, organizing, and ensuring safety standards are met.
- Collaborate with Pilgrim’s Market staff to promote and showcase the farm’s produce to customers.
Qualifications:
- Green thumb, required.
- Experience in hydroponic farming, organic agriculture, or a related field is preferred.
- Knowledge of organic farming principles and hydroponic systems, including nutrient management, water systems, and pest management.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot issues with hydroponic systems.
- Ability to self-educate through research, manuals, videos, and team collaboration.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Passion for organic farming practices.
- Good physical health and ability to work in various weather conditions.
- Excellent communication skills and a proactive attitude.
- Prior experience with farm management or operations is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and perform other physical tasks for extended periods.
- Ability to work in a greenhouse or other farming environments.
