LABORATORY OPERATIONS CHEMIST
Role Summary
This position is responsible for the safe and efficient shipping and receiving of laboratory samples, manufacturing products, chemical raw materials, and technical equipment as well as acting as the Technical and Innovation (T&I) Chemical Hygiene Officer and Waste Coordinator. This role ensures compliance with all relevant safety and transport regulations and procedures related to sample handling, transport, storage, preparing and shipping samples, receiving incoming chemical and equipment shipments, and ensuring proper handling and documentation of chemical materials, including chemical (waste) and equipment disposition for the Sharonville Technical and Innovation Center.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Shipping Activities
- Provide day-to-day support for product sample requests from Pilot Chemical Sales teams, Customers, and internal organizations such as T&I, Quality, Product Safety and Commercial.
- Pilot liaison with logistics vendors – FedEx, UPS, etc. to ensure timely and safe delivery of samples.
- Coordinate with Pilot Chemical plants (MDT, AVL, LCK and HST) and contract manufacturers on the intracompany transfer of production raw materials and samples.
- Maintain accurate records of shipments, including tracking numbers and delivery information.
- Handle hazardous materials in accordance with safety protocols.
- Process routine sample requests utilizing Salesforce.
- Function as main contact for the third-party sampling service (CMC).
- Manage the sample stock product inventory.
- Regular communications with (raw material) suppliers and third-party vendors.
- Assist in setting up sampling of new products; complete new product set up at CMC and coordinate necessary documents with suppliers and vendors
- Resident expert on shipping hazardous materials both domestically and internationally with a deep understanding of both IATA and DOT shipping regulations and procedures.
Chemical and Equipment Procurement Activities
- Handle hazardous materials in accordance with safety protocols.
- Manage the T&I chemical inventory system
- Collaborate with Chemists and Technical managers on procurement of appropriate R&D raw materials, consumables, and capital equipment.
- Function as the STIC waste coordinator/subject matter expert; supervise waste collection and disposal, as the primary contact for waste disposal providers. Teach STIC annual waste characterization training.
- Function as the T&I Chemical Hygiene Officer
- Ensure that all workers know and follow the chemical hygiene rules.
- Ensure that protective equipment is available and in working order.
- Provide regular, formal chemical hygiene and housekeeping inspections including routine inspections of emergency equipment.
- Determine the required levels of protective apparel and equipment.
- Ensure that facilities and training for the use of any material being ordered are adequate.
- Develop and implement appropriate hygiene policies and practices.
- Seek ways to improve the chemical hygiene program.
Synthesis and Blending Activities
- Synthesize, analyze and/or blend sample products for the Technical and Innovation Department as required.
- Ensuring compliance with the Responsible Care Management System® including the establishment of policies and procedures, assigning responsibilities, and tracking progress.
Required Competencies
- Minimum of an associate’s degree in any of the following disciplines: Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Zoology, Environmental Sciences, Forensic Sciences, Applied Science with a focus in laboratory work, or Chemical Lab Technology.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a full-time lab technician role will be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Experience working with an ERP system
- Advanced level computer skills
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Strong attention to detail and an ability to meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills – verbal and written
- Ability to multi-task
- Ability to work independently with little supervision
Preferred Competencies
- BS in Chemistry or in a related technical discipline
- Knowledge of Pilot Chemical products, chemistry, and procedures
- Experience with QPulse
- Experience with Chempax
- Experience with Salesforce
- Experience with a chemical inventory system
- Experience with reading and understanding SDSs
- Experience with IATA and DOT regulations
