Pilz Automation Safety L.P. is technology leader in safe automation technology. Pilz is currently seeking a remote Safety Consultant.
Safety Consultants provide safety guidance on the best way of achieving machine safety compliance. A Safety Consultant is highly technical and knowledgeable in general safety principles and standards, as well as having a strong background in safety controls engineering in machinery safety.
The Safety Consultant visits customer sites to conduct risk assessments, provide safety reports, lead safety design reviews, perform safety validations, assist with safety concepts, and coordinate other safety activities.
All Safety Consultants report to the Principal Safety Consultant.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide direction and leadership to Pilz customers on all machine safety issues
- Share machinery safety expertise and knowledge both written and verbally
- Conduct Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments; create written reports for customers
- Be able to identify hazards on a machine (e.g. access to gear/chain)
- Oversee and evaluate machine safety compliance based on standards such as, EN 60204-1, EN 61131-2, ISO 13849, ISO 14121, ISO 12100, UL 508, IEC 62061, and OSHA regulations [CFR]
- Provide internal support on how Pilz products should be applied to correctly achieve compliance per applicable safety standards
- Represent Pilz on various safety standards committees
- Present trainings on various safety standards, both internal and external
- Help develop tools (e.g. software) to facilitate Pilz service offerings
- Provide sales support to the Pilz Sales team as needed
- Interpret U.S. and international regulations to ensure machine compliance to industry
standards and directives - Maintain up to date knowledge of applicable standards
- Functionally test safety of machinery and electrical equipment across a wide range of industries and applications such as semiconductor, battery, tooling, and robots
- Assist customers in achieving CE Marking of their machines by assessing, preparing test plans, writing test reports, and facilitating certification
- Evaluate electrical circuits to determine safety performance levels and categories in accordance with SIO 13849-1
- Function as a mentor for incoming Safety Consultants and Safety Engineers
- Facilitate meetings and record technical discussions
- Other duties as assigned
Travel requirements for this position are up to 50%; bonus or comp time available
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associates’ degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Electromechanical Engineering or similar program and three (3) to five (5) years of hands-on experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to read electrical/controls schematics
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
- Solve and verify math formulas as established in IEC 61508 and ISO 13849
- Fluency in Microsoft Office including Excel and PowerPoint
- Able to work independently as needed
- Willingness to learn Pilz products and procedures
- Self-motivated, well-organized, and team oriented
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electromechanical, or Instrumentation Engineering
- Competency in electrical controls with a focus in safety circuits
- Ability to read/analyze/interpret/write business reports and professional journals
- Advanced Microsoft Office user including Excel and PowerPoint
- Familiar with safety standards such as IEC 61508, ISO 13849-1, and ANSI B11 series
- Familiar with Sistema software for performance level calculations
- Familiar with risk assessment process
- Familiar with mechanical drawing software (e.g. eDrawing)
- Able to read and understand Fluid (pneumatic and/or hydraulic) power circuits as outlined in ISO 4413 and ISO 4414
- Understanding of packaging, industrial, and Food & Beverage machines
- Understanding of Process control systems in accordance with IEC 61508 and IEC 62061
- Able to read P&ID loops/diagrams
Physical Requirements:
- Seated for extended periods with extensive screen (computer) time
- May be required to move/lift Pilz test equipment which may weigh up to 30 pounds

- Must be able to meet safety requirements of customers when on-site including climbing stairs and/or ladders, and possibly working in confined spaces
