Position Title : Instructor - Truck Driver Training Program (Temporary, Part-Time, up to 19.5 hours a week)

Department : Truck Driver Training Program

Rate of Pay : $26.38 / hour

Position Summary :

Pima Community College offers preparation and professional truck driver classes for Commercial Driver Licenses (CDL). This position performs a variety of instructional duties by assisting Class A and Class B commercial driver license students in the classroom, the truck driving range and on local roads. The Instructor / Lecturer delivers instruction to students using a variety of methods in multiple settings.

As part of the interview evaluation process, candidates will be asked to present a 10-minute presentation (includes 5 minutes of Q&A time) on an industry-related topic (choose between air brakes, coupling / uncoupling, shifting, or hours of service), directed at students in this program.

The work schedule for this position is flexible and may include working evenings and weekends.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Delivers instruction to students using a variety of methods; interacts with students in demonstrations; adjust teaching styles to meet the needs of a diverse student population
  • Prepares syllabi, instructional materials, lesson plans, and classroom and laboratory presentations to assist students in achieving educational goals.
  • Assesses student needs and goals; prepares progress reports; provides support and advocacy; meets with advisors to discuss student progress; and evaluates student progress for program continuation or completion. Uses alternative delivery methods of instruction to facilitate diverse student population
  • Creates and organizes material for classroom needs. Documents student performance, progress, and attendance. Assists students to meet the schedule and rigor of course
  • Prepares official records, forms, data-tracking reports, attendance reports, and related required documentation. Reads and responds to emails and other communications
  • Ensures the safety of instructional staff and students during behind the wheel training on the driving range and public road.
  • Participates in marketing the program and recruiting students
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor

Job Requirements :

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) and,
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience driving a commercial motor vehicle requiring the CDL and appropriate endorsement(s)
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) and,
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a behind-the-wheel commercial motor vehicle instructor
  • Preferred :

  • Licensed as a commercial driver license examiner for the state of Arizona
  • Additional Requirements :

  • Meet Department of Transportation and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration definitions of Class and Skill Instructor
  • Possess Class A Commercial Driver's License
  • Have a current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical
  • Pass DOT drug screen
  • Have a "Driver Not Prohibited" standing in the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse
  • Have no serious moving violations for the past five years, and DUI convictions within the past ten years
  • The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities :

  • Principles and practices of teaching, training, instruction of adult learners, specific to truck driver training
  • Standards and trends in the truck driving industry job market and requirements for employment in that industry
  • Basic principles of supervision and training
  • Selection, use, and evaluation of instructional materials and equipment
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Instruct students within a non-traditional delivery system to prepare students for employment and / or upgrade
  • Provide assistance and instruction to students on training related matters and training equipment and resources
  • Participate in the planning, developing, evaluating, and upgrade of competency-based training curricula
  • Work with individual and groups of students with different competencies and capabilities

  • Any or all of the following endorsements : passenger, hazardous materials, and school bus
  • Physical Demands :

    Positions in this class typically require : talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions and fine finger movements - using the fingers to manipulate / handle objects such as typing, sorting papers, activating buttons, or sorting / separating small parts.

    Medium Work : Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

    Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long periods or moving from one work site to another.
