Position Title: Direct Support Specialist
Department: Homeless Day Support Services
Job Location: Virginia Beach Oceanfront
Starting Pay: $16 Per Hour

The Ministry: As a support center to the unsheltered homeless and poorest of the poor since 2002, our objective is to alleviate human suffering and create a pathway out of poverty. We believe a holistic approach is needed to restore mind, body, and spirit. Our hope is to make today better but our goal is to change their tomorrow, and ultimately, as a Christian Ministry, their eternity. We do this through offering extensive wrap around services within our day support program (serving 1300 adults each year) with services such as showers, free clothing and hygiene, laundry, and prepared meals. We offer substance abuse peer support, behavioral health services that include licensed professional Christian counseling, job training, and a coaching model of case management focused on economic mobility and overall well-being to the most vulnerable. Each winter we operate an emergency winter shelter program that partners with local churches to help men and women stay safe and warm each night (400 different people during the season).

With a 10,000sf facility we are equipped to serve our homeless friends with 3 individual private showers, commercial laundry equipment, a complete inventory of clothing, shoes, and hygiene supplies, as well as space for use as a cooling/heating center. Within our facility we have an onsite integrated-care free clinic for the homeless for medical and mental health with 3 exam rooms, private professional counseling space for behavioral health and therapy, and collaborative relationships with local providers. We have a training and education center where we provide job training and workforce development, GED tutoring, and small support groups.

This is a very street level ministry where we meet those in crises and extreme poverty where they are. We love them, we serve them, we walk with them, and we provide opportunity and a pathway for them to transform their lives.

Job Summary: This position will include a variety of duties which include facilitating day support services for the homeless in helping them with clothing, clean showers, and prepared food. Setup/cleanup facility for daily services. Facilitating the seasonal cold whether emergency shelter that runs from November through March. Worker will also work with homeless clients to get benefits like SNAP, Medicaid, ordering Birth Certificate, ID’s, and other services necessary to help people experiencing homelessness. Direct Support team members could work a varied schedule that could include a weekend day, Saturday or Sunday, or during Winter Shelter season could include shift work. Applicants should be highly organized and enjoy working in a face paced environment.

Qualifications/Experience/Background:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid Virginia Driver License
• Ability to effectively and efficiently use computers or mobile devices to input, access, modify, or output information.
• Ability to handle physical aspects of job, including bending, stooping, lifting (50 pounds or more), pushing, pulling, reaching, and walking for extended periods of time. Restocking and managing donations.
• Human Service experience is preferred
• Customer Service or Hospitality experience useful
