JOB SUMMARY
Perform advanced-level skilled maintenance and repair work of a variety of automotive equipment and/or heavy duty equipment. The Mechanic, Senior job classification is distinguished from the Mechanic job classification by the greater difficulty and diversity of the tasks performed. May assist in training and oversight of mechanics and technicians.TYPICAL CLASSIFICATION ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Perform advanced-level skilled preventive maintenance, repairs and adjustments on County Fleet vehicles, in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures under basic supervision.
- Use the appropriate safety equipment and procedures in performing assignments.
- Promote and adhere to the workplace values of accountability, commitment, and teamwork to help enrich lives beyond expectation.
- Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, customer records, and restricted County information.
- Perform other related duties as required.
POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Light Duty Assignment
- Perform advanced-level skilled maintenance and repair work of emergency vehicle equipment, and specialty light duty vehicles and equipment.
- Work requires a high degree of technical knowledge as well as the ability to exercise independent judgment in determining the method of repair.
- Diagnose and repair electrical and powertrain systems and performing major repairs on a wide range of vehicles.
- Perform related duties as required.
Heavy Duty Assignment
- Perform advanced-level skilled maintenance and repair work of heavy-duty equipment, including diesel-powered equipment.
- Work requires a high degree of technical knowledge as well as the ability to exercise independent judgment in determining the method of repair.
- Diagnose and repair electrical and hydraulic systems and performing major repairs on a wide range of vehicles, including heavy construction and heavy duty road construction equipment.
- Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to a minimum of three years as a journey-level mechanic.
- Or 1 year of experience with Pinal County as a Mechanic.
- Or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience may substitute for the minimum requirements.
Required Certifications (Light Duty Assignment):
- Four (4) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
Required certifications (Heavy Duty Assignment):
Four (4) Heavy Duty - Truck certifications or ASE.
Special Requirements:
- Valid Arizona State Commercial Driver's License is require within 6 months of hire (Heavy Duty Assignment).
- Must have the appropriate tools needed to perform the assigned duties.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Extensive experience in the repair and maintenance of Emergency Vehicles, Specialty Vehicles, Heavy-Duty Trucks, or Heavy-Duty Construction Equipment. Certification as an ASE Master.
- Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of vehicles, equipment, and components.
- Knowledge of gasoline & diesel engines, power trains, and hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and electrical systems.
- Knowledge of Federal, state, and FSD safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.
- Knowledge of county geography, traffic patterns, streets, landmarks, and facility locations.
- Knowledge of proper use and storage of hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.
- Knowledge of environmentally responsible and resource-efficient maintenance techniques.
- Knowledge of Fleet Management Software Systems.
- Skill in inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical problems in a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in identifying maintenance needs and mechanical problems and taking corrective actions.
- Skill in performing computerized diagnostic tests and fine calibrations on vehicle components and equipment.
- Skill in welding, metal fabricating, and adapting parts and tools to specific repairs.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and specifications.
- Ability to follow and maintain safety standards and identify safety problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work requires exerting in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The work also requires the ability to balance, climb, crawl, crouch, finger, feel, grasp, handle, perform repetitive motion, kneel, lift, pull, push, hear, speak, stoop, stand, walk, operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment, and demonstrate mental and visual acuity.

The hiring salary for this position is dependent upon experience, qualifications and position funding; starting salaries above the first quartile require additional approval.
