JOB SUMMARY
Examine the complex commercial, industrial, and residential building plans to assure compliance with building and safety codes, interpret building and safety codes and Building Safety Department (BSD) policy objectives, and provide assistance to the public with building code and permitting questions under general supervision.Work in this classification requires an individual to be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the primary classification functions herein described. TYPICAL CLASSIFICATION ESSENTIAL DUTIES:           

• Examine complex commercial, industrial, and residential building plans, documents, and specifications and assure the building design and construction documents comply with the building and safety codes.
• Interpret building and safety codes and Building Safety Department (BSD) policy objectives in addition to complying with federal, state and regional building, housing and technical codes and regulations.
• Assist the Department Director with technical decisions and communications with design professionals and the public.
• Identify technical issues and suggests solutions.
• Provide assistance to the public with building code and permitting questions.
• Assist Plans Examiners with code interpretation, analysis, research, decision standards, conflict resolutions, and compliance recommendations.
• Attend community and planning committee meetings to represent the BSD.
• Assist the Department Director in planning and managing daily activities and assist with official interpretation of County codes, policies, and department procedures.
• Provide technical assistance to designers, contractors, developers, and the general public.
• Assist customers with plan review and plan and permit submittals and answer building code and procedural questions.
• Coordinate work with other County departments on code issues and plan coordination efforts.
• May serve as a Lead and provide input and guidance to the department Director on performance appraisals. 
• To promote and adhere to the workplace values of accountability, commitment, and teamwork to help enrich lives beyond expectation.
• Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, customer records and restricted County information.

Perform other related duties as required MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK: 

• Associate’s Degree in Drafting, Business, Engineering, Architecture or related field.
• Five (5) years of plans examination experience.
• International Code Council (ICC) Building Plans Examiner (IBC) certification is required.
• International Code Council (ICC) Residential and Commercial Building Inspector certification is required within one (1) year of hire.
• Valid Driver’s License and Arizona State Driver’s License within 30 days of hire.  
• Or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience may substitute for the minimum requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of Federal, state, and regional building, housing, and technical codes and regulations.
• Knowledge of building construction principles, practices, materials, and methods.
• Knowledge of current and evolving trends in building technologies and construction methods.
• Skill in interpreting building and safety regulations and comparing them with plans, maps, and technical specifications.
• Ability to provide advice and consultation on compliance requirements.
• Ability to work with representatives of other state and regional planning agencies to address and resolve technical issues.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is light and requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.  The work also requires the ability to finger, reach, perform repetitive motion, stand, hear, speak, walk, operate motor vehicles and demonstrate mental and visual acuity.

The hiring salary for this position is dependent upon experience, qualifications and position funding; starting salaries above the first quartile require additional approval.
