Shift: Department is in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days per year. Shift typically assigned to department manager is Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Assigned shifts are subject to change according to the needs of the department.

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology with at least two years’ experience in nonwaived testing. Medical Technologist certification by a professional laboratory certifying agency (i.e., ASCP, AMT, ASCLS). Five years of clinical lab experience. One to two years of management/leadership experience.

Other Requirements: Current BLS certification. Phlebotomy experience. Experience with regulatory and accreditation of laboratory operations, preferably CLIA and/or CAP. Solid knowledge of LIS and new test method verification & implementation processes. Strong computer skills. Good multi-tasking and organizational skills. Ability to communicate in a professional manner.

Position Purpose: Directs, establishes, and plans the overall policies and goals for a hospital's laboratory services. Works closely with hospital staff, department managers, and physicians to ensure the standards of quality and service are maintained. Writes and updates procedures and manuals as needed and reviews them annually to ensure that employees have current information needed to perform tests and procedures. The Laboratory Manager is responsible for supervising the various tests, results, software systems, quality control, and pricing for the lab, as well as supervising staff. Performs routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease, including (but not limited to) the areas of Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Serology, Phlebotomy and Molecular Biology (PCR).

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the overall operation and administration of the laboratory, including the employment of personnel who are competent to perform test procedures, and record and report test results promptly, accurately, and proficiently and for assuring compliance with the applicable regulation.

Ensure that the test methodologies selected have the capability of providing the quality of results required for patient care; verification procedures used are adequate to determine the accuracy, precision and other pertinent performance characteristics of the method; and laboratory personnel are performing the test methods as required for accurate and reliable results.

Ensure that the laboratory is enrolled in an approved proficiency testing program for the testing performed and that the proficiency testing samples are tested as required by CLIA and CAP; the results are returned within the timeframes established by the proficiency testing program; all proficiency testing reports are reviewed by the appropriate staff to evaluate the laboratory's performance and to identify any problems that require corrective action; and an approved corrective action plan is followed when any proficiency testing results are found to be unacceptable or unsatisfactory.

Establishes and implements written operating procedures and protocols that are in compliance with OSHA standards for HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis and Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure.

Establishes and maintains a routine documented schedule of quality control and quality assurance, including satisfying the external quality control procedures established by the College of American Pathology.

Performs laboratory testing - hematology, immunohematology, bacteriology, molecular biology, urinalysis, immunology, chemistry, endocrinology, serology, and parasitology. Obtains and processes specimens; performs tests; interprets and reports results.

Stays abreast of new tests, new procedures, and new technology in the Medical Technology field. Initiates discussion with medical and administrative personnel regarding implementation of new methodology, tests, and procedures as appropriate, including implementation of a Laboratory Information System.

Prepare department budgets for personnel, operating expenses and capital equipment. Responsible for the fiscal operation of the department.

Initiate, interpret and enforce Laboratory Services procedures. Develops new or revises policy and procedures as needed and completes annual review of policy and procedure. Ensure that an approved procedure manual is available to all personnel responsible for any aspect of the testing process

Assesses the staff's competence and compliance to policies of the laboratory and pathology departments and ensures continued competence and compliance through staff education, development, and counseling. Schedules staff and holds department meetings; encourages and organizes staff to work as a team. Works closely with the Human Resources Department to comply with hiring process.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $68,120.00 - $107,702.40 per year
