,JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Library Programmer's primary responsibility is to provide programs and services for children, teens, adults, and families for the Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Library System and outreach.
In conjunction with other Library Programmers the selection programs for childrens, teens, and adults will be created. Working with other locations, plan, coordinate, and manage system-wide programs. Manage a system-wide program budget along with the Program/Children Dept Manager.
Perform outreach services throughout Jefferson County to daycares, senior centers and other community agencies as well as represent the library at community events. Development of positive community partners while promoting the library is required.
The programmer will also work in the children's department at the Main Library. In the children department programmer will answer questions from patrons and monitor the Children and Teen areas. Ensure the children and teen areas are clean, orderly and welcoming.
This position requires a team player with a positive outlook and a desire to work with all populations.
JOB DUTIES
GENERAL DUTIES
- Works cooperatively with other Library Programmers
- Receives oral and written direction from the Operations Manager
- Develops and presents programs for children, teens, and adults throughout the Libary System.
- Helps develop and manage programming budget while providing input on improving programs.
- Develops services for all age people with special needs
- Provides reference and reader’s advisory, help in using the online catalog and other electronic tools; assists and instructs patrons in using library services, equipment, and facilities.
- With other Library Programmers, evaluates materials utilizing review sources and selects materials for the children and teen area at the Main Library.
- Promotes a positive image in the community through programs, services, partnerships, and participation in community events
- Coordinates program planning with schools and other community agencies.
- Ensures the children and teen areas are clean, well maintained, and welcoming
- Researches programs and services offered in the community as well as in the larger library community with the goal of continual improvement and the addition of services and programs; stays informed on issues related to library services, programming and reading trends worldwide.
- Submits programming requisitions to the Bookkeeper before purchase, which stay well within the budget.
- Offer outreach programs for Jefferson County.
- Creates displays to promote library usage and ensure the library environment remains vibrant and attractive
- Library Programmer shall cheerfully perform any other work or duties as is necessary for the general operation of the Department, or for the operation of the Library System in general.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Library Programmer must meet the requirement of Full-time or Part-time staff (as position decrees) as outlined in the Library’s Staff Manual. The employee should have a bachelor’s degree education or related field with programming or experiencing working with public in related setting. The candidate should have good communication skills, a positive attitude and demeanor, feel comfortable with public speaking, have good computer skills, have a basic knowledge of the operation of a public library, have reliable transportation, and a valid driver's license. The candidate should be proficient in business English, be able to read and comprehend and follow policy. The candidate must be able to work Saturdays and evenings.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

- Ability to interact with public in a friendly, non-threatening manner while providing programs, informational and readers’ advisory assistance
- Ability to act in accordance with library values. The position assists in the communication of the library vision, values, policies and position; must work well with people of all ages and maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Working knowledge of the Library’s policies and procedures and the ability to adhere to same
- Ability to plan, organize and coordinate programs; ability to develop new programs and services for the public
- Ability to budget and stay within budget
- Understand the basics of programming and how food plays into public programming
- Ability to manage projects and develop implementation plans for approved program initiatives
- Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, associates, officials of other agencies, the general public, and vendors

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduation from an accredited 4-year college, plus 2 years of job related library experience and training
- Other combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work requires routine physical effort in the handling of light and moderately heavy materials of up to 40 pounds. May require standing for long periods of time and frequent stooping and bending.
Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, libraries, classrooms or meeting and training rooms, parking lots, and grounds e.g., use of safe work place practices and observance of fire and building safety
regulations and traffic signals when driving.
This position requires the employee to be available to perform Library duties at any branch location with the understanding that transportation to a duty assignment in Jefferson County, Arkansas is the employee's sole responsibility.
