What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Intervention Specialist position at Pinebrook Family Answers?
The primary responsibility of the Community Intervention Specialist (CIS) is to work closely with the Police Department to assess individuals with mental illness, in order to refer individuals to appropriate services in an expedient manner, reduce recidivism, and to promote the Recovery Model. Through collaboration and communication, this position helps to support the effective implementation of Sequential Intercept Model recommendations. The CIS is supervised regularly by the Director of Community-based Mental Health Programs, as well as evaluated annually.
WHAT You’ll Do as a Community Intervention Specialist (C.I.S.):
- Works closely with the Law Enforcement Officers to obtain needed information for use in assisting clients with mental health and substance abuse issues.
- Provides support and education to Law Enforcement Officers regarding mental health issues, substance abuse, and the needs of people struggling with those issues by providing them gain skills and confidence.
- Accompanies Law Enforcement Officers during community interventions upon request and accompanies them on ride-alongs when it is safe to do so.
- Maintains knowledge of community resources and relationships with resource providers to make timely and appropriate referrals for clients.
- Answers calls and provides information and assistance as appropriate.
- Attends Police Department unit, PBFA department, and agency-wide staff meetings and trainings.
- Maintains professional competence by attending mandated trainings on CIT, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma, and Substance Abuse, as well as conferences, workshops and related educational programs; provides training information to the Human Resources Department for tracking purposes.

- This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in human services or a related field.
- Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills; strong bilingual written and spoken communication skills; good organizational and record-keeping skills; phone and word processing skills.
- Ability to effectively respond to the needs of individuals and groups as well as ability to portray and maintain professional boundaries are a must; familiarity with and skills in dealing with mental health clients, families, issues, and service delivery systems.
- Ability to understand and empathize with individuals, obtain needed information in order to assist individuals, guide individuals through simple problem-solving steps, provide information and referrals, and evaluate whether there is a need for psychiatric services.
- Own transportation and clean driving record.
