Summary:
Assists the supervising physician in the management of patients and performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures under the physician’s supervision.
Duties:
- Obtain patient health histories and complete physical examinations. Document findings, noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings.
- Assess patient for change in status and institute appropriate interventions. Initiate necessary emergency interventions to stabilize patient.
- Provide ongoing outpatient care of assigned patients as well as episodic patients;
- Prescribe medications within defined scope of practice (including schedule 11-V controlled substances) and write orders and prescriptions as necessary for the care of the patient in accordance with Federal and State Law.
- Order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, and x-rays;
- Carry out health promotion and disease prevention activities;
- Provide education and counseling to patients and families for preventative care, medical conditions and use of prescribed treatment and drugs;
- Administration of topical anesthesia
- Provide preoperative consultations
- Writes progress notes and narrative discharge summaries.
- Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to assist the physician in diagnosing medical and surgical problems.
- Prescribes treatments and services for quality patient care; records the normal and abnormal data for review by the physicians.
- Explains the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient.
- Monitors progress of patients, reports progress to supervising physician and maintains record of each patient’s progress.
- Provides continuity of care by developing and implementing patient management plans.
- Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.

Requirements
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1-2 years of Orthopaedic experience preferred
- Graduated from an accredited Physician Assistant educational program
- Certification from American Academy of Physician Assistants
- North Carolina Physician Assistant license required
- Knowledge of medical guidelines and procedures regarding examination, therapy and recovery
- Familiarity with advancements in medical technology and current know-how
- Excellent communication skills
- Health promotion and maintenance
- The ability to treat patients with compassion and empathy
