The work performed by Maintenance 1 employees is heavy labor, and mostly outdoor work in all types of weather elements. This work includes but is not limited to sidewalk grinding, sidewalk installation, bridge repair, bridge painting, asphalt work, flagging traffic, guardrail repairs, handrail repair, emergency response crew work, etc. Employees in this position may also complete inventory, inspections, and maintenance of tools. Our Maintenance 1employees can be moved to a different crew performing any of the tasks previously mentioned whenever the need arises.
This is unskilled and limited semi-skilled manual labor work. Employees in this class perform light to heavy manual laboring tasks in a wide variety of construction and maintenance work. Some assignments, including elementary equipment operation, may require skills which can readily be learned on the job and many tasks are routine and repetitive in nature and, once learned, can be carried on without difficulty under general supervision.
Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM

What Would You Do?
- Assists with all maintenance labor tasks within the work unit.
- Maintenance work may include bridge repairs, sidewalk repair/replacement, painting of structure, guardrail repair/replacement, handrail repair/replacement, seawall repairs, stormwater pipe
- Demonstrates self-motivated work ethic and is safety conscious.
- Assists with asphalt work.
- Completion of the ninth grade; or
- 6 months laborer, groundskeeping or field trades related work; or
- An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver’s License with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.
- Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
- Ability to effectively verbally communicate with the team and supervisors.
- Knowledge of basic construction and maintenance tools, equipment, materials and methods.
- Ability to use hand power equipment (Concrete saws, drills, truck-mounted crane, needle guns, etc.). This shall include operating, cleaning, and simple maintenance of the tools.
- Knowledge of maintenance of traffic operations and roadway hazard mitigation - flagging traffic for safety control, placing barricades, picking up dead animals, picking up trash and debris.
- Ability to understand and implement County policies and procedures and embrace the department's foundational values.
- Ability to take direction and successfully complete an assigned task.
- Ability to use a computer at a basic level.
