SUBSTITUTE TEACHER
Period: Daily, on-call
Supervisor: Dean of Faculty and designated Department Head
Other Contact Personnel: Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Faculty
Qualifications: High school diploma; experience working with teenagers preferred; ability to be self-directed and organized; capability of implementing lessons, supervising and keeping students on task, and addressing behavior issues.
Goal: To carry out the vision and mission of Pinkerton Academy when covering for a teacher who is not able to be in the classroom for a particular reason on any given day.
Daily responsibilities:
- Connect with the administrative assistant to the Dean of Faculty (in person, through electronic communication) by 6:50 am for assignment and schedule.
- Report to the Department Head to gather any materials needed for the daily assignment and any additional information and instructions that may be needed.
- Follow and report to all scheduled classes and duties on time as indicated by the schedule provided.
- Follow and implement all policies, rules and regulations of Pinkerton Academy as stated in the Substitute Handbook and Student Planner including issuing of passes and handling of conduct issues. Follow guidelines in the Substitute Handbook regarding the handling of conduct issues.
- Become familiar with and be able to carry out all emergency situations, such as fire drills, as indicated in the Substitute Handbook.
- Review class lists/rosters/substitute plans for indication of students with special needs or 504 plans and be cognizant of the procedures for instructing students with individual plans.
- Keep all information, materials or knowledge concerning the school (teachers, students, or any personnel) confidential.
- At the beginning of each class introduce yourself to the students. Let students know your expectations and your expectations of them. Using Aspen, take accurate attendance. Carry out the day’s lesson by providing clear guidelines and instructions by way of verbal and written communication.
- Establish and maintain appropriate standards of behavior consistent with the rules found in the Student Planner and implement these rules in a fair and just manner.
- At the end of the class period, write a short summary of class accomplishments, behavior and discipline issues. The form is located online. Substitute Teacher Rev. 1/2019, 10/2020, 8/2021
- Throughout the class period, be respectful, consistent, understanding, and patient.
- Throughout the class period, continuously supervise, monitor and control students by moving about the classroom to assure the safety and optimum learning of all.
- Provide assistance to students who are in need of help with the assigned lesson to the best of your ability in regards to the subject matter.
- Consistently check email or other electronic communication for updates or changes to daily assignment.
- Upon leaving for the day, be sure the classroom is in good order, organize paperwork, put away materials, close windows, shut off lights, and close the door upon exiting.
- At the end of the day, please place all materials in the teacher’s mailbox or on their desk. A copy of the written summary report is to be sent to the teacher and the Department Head.
