At Pinnacles Prep Charter School, the Kitchen Assistant ensures a smooth and timely flow of customers in the lunchroom, while maintaining a safe and clean environment. You will assist with food preparation, operating kitchen equipment, and supporting the Kitchen Manager or Food Service Director in various food and nutrition-related tasks. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to the overall success of the school’s dining services, helping to ensure students have a positive and nutritious meal experience each day.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Customer Service
- Follows a school-wide customer service-driven philosophy that focuses on value and satisfaction. Implements customer service techniques to promote customer satisfaction.
- Follows quality standards for the presentation and service of food.
- Follows school nutrition program guidelines for serving and offering meal components to students.
Meal Preparation and Service
- Ensures all meals in the school nutrition program are prepared in compliance with federal, state, and local nutrition and wellness regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Utilize modern methods of food preparation, including recipe adjustment, acceptable product standards, including quality and sanitation aspects, basic math, and basic computer operation.
- Operate kitchen equipment as directed.
- Follows policies and procedures for maintaining food production records for the school nutrition program.
Sanitation, Food Safety, and Employee Safety
- Follows proper procedures for receiving food and supplies.
- Follows procedures to ensure that appropriate storage techniques are implemented.
- Maintains sanitation, safety, and security practices to protect the health and well-being of students, customers, and employees.
- Washes service wares and kitchen utensils, pots and pans, and equipment.
- Cleans production areas as necessary.
Other Duties
- Participates in professional development training and exhibits professional behavior.
- Adheres to professional codes of conduct for diverse staff and interpersonal relationships among teachers, principals, other school staff, and students.
- Communicates with employees in a manner that promotes cooperation and reduces conflicts.
- Fills in where needed to ensure efficient operations.
- Maintain a positive attitude and style that contributes to the overall public relations of the District
- Able to be flexible and work with interruptions in a positive manner and in an environment with a number of staff, students, and parents/guardians often present
- Able to maintain self-control under stressful situations and workload pressures without exhibiting negative behaviors (e.g., loss of temper, rudeness, use of foul language, etc.)
QUALIFICATIONS:- Currently holds or will obtain WA state Food Handlers Permit upon employment.
- Desire to learn and develop new skills and to work as part of a team.
- Comfortable in an ambiguous, fast-moving, start-up environment with a drive towards clarity, solutions, and sustainability.
- Ability to work with and monitor students.
- Detail-oriented, highly organized, and self-reflective.

- Must be productive, efficient (able to work at a fast pace), dependable, and able to meet timelines.
- Must be able to lift approximately 10-15 pounds frequently and must be able to lift approximately 50 pounds occasionally. Prolonged walking and standing is required.
- Skills necessary to build good rapport with students and staff from diverse cultural, social and economic backgrounds.
- Working home phone or cell phone required.
- HS Diploma or GED required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors. The employee will work near or with food preparation equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as degreasers and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
COMPENSATION
$17 - $21/hr. depending on experience & qualifications. 190 days/10 months
SUPERVISOR & TEAM:
The Kitchen Assistant reports directly to the Food Services Director and is a part of the Operations Team at Pinnacles Prep.
SCHEDULE:
The Kitchen Assistant is a Part-Time school-year position, working at least 20 hours per week during the school year with opportunities to work up to 40 hours per week. During the school year, the schedule is from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Daily school Breakfast and school Lunch are available at no cost to the food services staff.
Approximate Division of Job Duties:
55% Cooking and prepping meals
25% Serving meals
20% Cleaning the kitchen and cafeteria
