About this Position
This junior-level biology position involves all aspects of biological work from field data collection, data analysis and summary, to report writing. The position could also involve task and project management on smaller projects. On average, duties would involve approximately 75% field and 25% office work; with fieldwork mainly along the Front Range of Colorado, but occasionally throughout the state of Colorado and surrounding states.
Duties may involve conducting fieldwork and evaluating habitat for wildlife, wetlands, noxious weeds, and sensitive plant species. Knowledge of flora and fauna in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West is highly desirable. In addition, the ideal candidate will be proficient in field data collection processes and technology, be able to work outdoors for long hours in occasional adverse weather conditions, work in remote locations, and be available for periodic travel in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West. Work may be conducted independently or in a team setting – the candidate should be comfortable in either situation. Excellent communication skills are essential, including technical writing abilities.

Essential Responsibilities - The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Perform most aspects of biology tasks, with a focus on fieldwork.
    • Familiarity with wetland delineations and characterize hydrology, hydric soils, and hydrophytic vegetation.
    • Identify and map populations of noxious weeds along transportation corridors.
    • Determine presence or absence and status of migratory bird nests and identify species when possible.
  • Collect field data using handheld GPS devices, maps, mobile data collection methods (such as smart phone data entry or Field Maps for ArcGIS), or other techniques.
  • Follow established protocols but also apply techniques to fit site-specific field conditions and project needs. Conduct fieldwork in a safe and responsible manner, with little supervision. 
  • Analyze field data and summarize in reports, which may include tables, maps, photologs, and other appendices.
  • Drive company truck to multiple current/active or future construction sites throughout the day.
  • Work will generally occur during daylight hours and during the work week but may include dawn/dusk hours and weekend work depending on the task and client requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in biology, botany, wildlife biology, range management, environmental science, or related field.
  • 1 to 3 years of biology experience.
  • Strong western plant and wildlife identification preferred.
  • Wetland delineation and permitting experience preferred. Experience in revegetation, wetland restoration, or mitigation techniques is a plus.
  • Experience working in a variety of ecosystems, especially those found in Colorado and surrounding states.
  • Strong technical writing skills and effective communication skills required.
  • Experience with analytical data review, interpretation, and report preparation.
  • Proficiency with a variety of computer software including Microsoft office suite required; experience in ArcPad and ArGIS preferred.
  • Work effectively both in a team setting as well as independently.
  • Candidates should have the capacity and be willing to work outdoors in all seasons through various kinds of weather. 
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
