Key Responsibilities
Electrical Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Perform routine inspection, maintenance, and repair of electrical and instrumentation systems to ensure proper functionality and plant safety.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues with AC/DC motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and process control instruments.
- Identify root causes of equipment failures and develop effective solutions to minimize downtime.
- Implement upgrades, modifications, and replacements for outdated or underperforming electrical components.
- Maintain and repair hydraulic, pneumatic, and electromechanical systems associated with plant operations.
Instrumentation & Control System Operations
- Install, configure, and maintain industrial instrumentation, including sensors, flow meters, pressure transducers, level controls, and analytical devices.
- Calibrate equipment to ensure accurate measurement and control of plant processes.
- Read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, P&IDs (piping and instrumentation diagrams), and technical manuals to troubleshoot complex system issues.
- Assist with the integration and programming of PLC-based automation systems, ensuring seamless communication between control elements.
- Coordinate with engineers and operations personnel to enhance plant automation and process control strategies.
Safety, Compliance & Best Practices
- Execute and enforce lock-out, tag-out (LOTO) procedures to protect personnel and equipment during maintenance activities.
- Adhere to OSHA, NFPA, NEC, and company-specific safety standards when working on electrical systems.
- Conduct routine emergency shutdown system (ESD) testing and verify safety interlocks are functioning correctly.
- Ensure all work is performed following environmental, health, and safety (HSE) protocols, minimizing risks to personnel and equipment.
- Maintain proper documentation of maintenance activities, including work orders, calibration logs, and compliance reports.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Act as a key point of contact for third-party contractors performing electrical and instrumentation maintenance, ensuring tasks are completed safely and efficiently.
- Assist with the development and refinement of preventive maintenance plans to enhance long-term equipment reliability.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to enhance system efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and optimize equipment lifespan.
- Support engineering and project teams in the commissioning of new equipment and system modifications.
- Provide training and guidance to plant operators and junior maintenance personnel on electrical safety and troubleshooting best practices.
Qualifications & Experience
Required Qualifications:
- Associate degree or technical certification in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation, Industrial Technology, or a related field.
- 3 years of experience in industrial electrical maintenance, preferably in a process plant, power generation, or waste-to-energy facility.
- Hands-on experience working with PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and SCADA-based automation systems.
- Strong understanding of industrial control systems, loop tuning, and instrumentation calibration.
- Familiarity with OSHA electrical safety regulations, National Electrical Code (NEC), and NFPA 70E standards.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and control system diagrams.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing motor control circuits, power distribution systems, and low-voltage electrical systems.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Journeyman Electrician License or equivalent industry certification.
- Experience in a waste-to-energy, biomass, gasification, or power generation facility.
- Knowledge of process control programming, DCS systems, and network communication protocols (Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profibus).
- Experience with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) for tracking work orders and preventive maintenance activities.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- This role requires working in an industrial plant environment, with exposure to heat, noise, rotating equipment, and airborne particulates.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces as needed.
- Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, and arc flash-rated clothing when necessary.
- May involve occasional travel to other company sites for training and project support.
- Standard work schedule is Monday-Friday, with potential on-call or overtime work depending on plant operational needs.
