What are the responsibilities and job description for the Power Trader position at Piper Maddox?
Piper Maddox is partnered with a global, well-established bank looking to grow out their Power Trading division.
Responsibilities:
- Actively trade cash power markets, focusing on Northeast and ERCOT regions, with a strong emphasis on short-term and up-to-three-month curve trading.
- Develop, execute, and refine proprietary trading strategies that go beyond asset hedging, aiming to optimize risk-adjusted returns.
- Analyze fundamental and technical market drivers, including supply-demand dynamics, weather patterns, regulatory shifts, and congestion trends.
- Monitor real-time market conditions and react swiftly to capitalize on opportunities while effectively managing risk exposure.
- Collaborate with risk management, quantitative analysts, and structuring teams to enhance trading strategies and market insights.
- Leverage deep knowledge of ISOs, including PJM, NYISO, ERCOT, and NEPOOL, to identify and exploit inefficiencies in power markets.
- Maintain and enhance relationships with counterparties, brokers, and internal stakeholders to improve market access and trade execution.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and internal risk limits while maximizing trading opportunities.
Qualifications:
- 3-5 years of experience in power trading, with a strong background in cash trading and a positive PnL track record.
- Deep understanding of Northeast and ERCOT market structures, pricing mechanisms, and trading dynamics.
- Proven ability to think strategically and communicate a clear, well-reasoned trading approach.
- Experience navigating ISO rules and regulatory frameworks that impact short-term power trading.
- Banking experience is a plus but not required.
