Recreation Therapists work with a team of Recreation Therapists and Professionals to plan, develop, and implement person-centered recreational programs that enhance the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being of residents. This role focuses on creating meaningful, individualized activities that align with residents' preferences, abilities, and life histories following the APIE process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.
Members of the Recreation team rotate holiday and weekend coverage, ensuring a work-life balance. This position does include a $2,500 sign-on bonus!
Essential Job Duties
- Develop and implement engaging therapeutic recreation programs tailored to individual resident needs and interests.
- Conduct assessments to determine residents’ abilities, preferences, and goals for recreation therapy.
- Collaborate with residents, families, and interdisciplinary teams to create personalized activity plans.
- Completes the MDS, resident care plans, assessments and life stories. Attends resident/family conferences (IDT Meetings).
- Encourages residents to take an active part in the community and recreation programs while respecting personal choices and preferences.
- Facilitate group and one-on-one activities that promote socialization, cognitive stimulation, and physical well-being.
- Escorts residents for on-site and off-site scheduled programs.
- Records and maintains accurate documentation of residents’ progress and responses to program; modifies activities as needed.
- Upholds each resident’s dignity, autonomy, and physical well-being.
- Responsible for completing resident council minutes and formatting and proofing of all life stores preparation before publication.
- Communicates with other Piper Shores staff regarding resident concerns, problems, or incidents immediately.
- Assists the Recreation Manager with identifying volunteer opportunities, enlisting volunteer support, and coordinating volunteer efforts.
- Drives Piper Shores’ vehicles and/or accompany residents for activity transportation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation and one (1) year experience in a therapeutic recreation program. Applicants must be able to sit for CTRS exam, or have current CTRS by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification.
- Strong desire and ability to work with the senior population including those with dementia
- Current and ongoing CPR certification preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Thorough knowledge of current state and federal regulations.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English.
- Must be available to work a flexible/rotating schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays as needed.
- Ability to work with a minimum of direction.
- Ability to work well with others in setting up events and coordinating programs both within the department and with other departments.
- Must have effective communication skills. Ability to maintain a positive, supportive environment for all others.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
All employees must be fully vaccinated against Influenza, and required Public Health vaccines such as MMR/TB/etc. A two-step TB test is required upon hire.
