Position Overview
The Controller will be responsible for overseeing the accounting operations of the company, including financial reporting, process development, and staff leadership. This individual will address the challenges of a multi-entity, multi-location environment while ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting. The Controller will collaborate with leadership to optimize systems, standardize processes, and improve the efficiency of the accounting department.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, a problem solver, and has strong leadership and process improvement skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Oversight
- Manage and oversee the daily operations of the accounting department, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and intercompany accounting.
- Prepare and review accurate and timely financial statements, including consolidations across multiple entities.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal financial policies.
- Process Development and Improvement
- Develop and document standard operating procedures (SOPs) for key accounting functions.
- Implement sustainable and efficient processes for month-end and year-end close, reconciliations, and intercompany transactions.
- Identify and streamline inefficiencies in manual workflows, including payroll and credit card processing.
- Technology and Systems
- Leverage the Syteline ERP system to optimize accounting operations.
- Build and implement advanced Excel tools, including macros and data analysis templates, to support accounting tasks.
- Evaluate existing software and recommend/implement technology improvements to reduce manual entry and improve accuracy.
- Leadership and Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and train the accounting team, ensuring a high standard of performance and professional growth.
- Collaborate with the part-time Controller and Accounting Manager to delegate tasks and balance workloads.
- Foster a positive and collaborative team culture.
- Audit and Compliance
- Oversee audits, including payroll, tax, and intercompany reconciliations.
- Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations.
- Manage internal controls to protect company assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
Qualifications
Education and Certification:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA or equivalent certification preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a Controller or senior-level accounting role.
- Experience working in multi-entity and multi-location environments.
- Proven track record of implementing and improving accounting processes.
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
- Proficiency in ERP systems (Syteline experience a plus) and advanced Excel skills (macros, pivot tables, data analysis).
- Exceptional organizational and analytical skills with a strong attention to detail.
- Ability to balance tracking detail with operational efficiency.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to train and mentor staff.
- Experience managing audits and preparing budgets.
