What are the responsibilities and job description for the Retail Operations Technician position at Pitkin County?
Screens loads coming into the Mercantile diversion store; determines whether to accept items or route them to other Solid Waste Center areas for proper disposal.
Processes donated items through inventory and presents items for sale using merchandising and organisation techniques; Assist customers with purchases & maintains the mercantile area as a safe work environment for SWC users.
Operates a point of sale (POS) system and maintains a cash drawer; enters cash, check, and credit card payments accurately into the accounting system for daily reconciliation; reconciles cash drawer to the Solid Waste Center’s accounting system.
Delivers and promotes exceptional internal and external customer service, while assisting and educating the public with understanding solid waste procedures; apply critical thinking skills with care and accuracy.
Supports the relationship between Pitkin County government and the public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and County staff; maintain confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; perform other duties as required or assigned.
This position follows a sequence.
Level I:
Up to 1 year of customer service experience
High School diploma or GED equivalent
Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record
Level II (in addition to Level I):
1-3 years of experience in cash handling and customer service
1-3 years of experience with sales or retail operations and POS software
OSHA 24-hour HAZWOPER, SWANA waste screening course
Level III :
Three plus years of customer service and sales in a retail environment; minimum of one year of experience with SWC in a customer-facing environment.
Competency with Mercantile POS back office system and accounting procedures.
Education or training in any craft, maintenance, art, home décor or upcycling is preferred
Knowledge Of:
General County and office policies and procedures.
Customer service techniques, including de-escalation.
Basic accounting and budgeting principles and practices.
Inventory management methods and practices.
Skill In:
Organizing and prioritizing work to meet deadlines and accomplish tasks.
Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, typing and entering data with speed and accuracy.
Microsoft Office Products and Google Suite.
Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Work will be performed on-site at the Solid Waste Center in a warehouse setting and may require working weekends.
Some work will be performed outdoors with exposure to inclement weather conditions, uneven walking surfaces and dangerous machinery and requires moderate physical exertion for tasks such as lifting and moving heavy objects with assistance and manually removing snow.
