JOB
Under general supervision this position is responsible to protect the public health and respond to requests concerning a variety of animal problems and complaints dealing with domestic animals and sometimes-wild animals as they might relate to rabies. This position regulates the rabies control laws of the State and policies of the County. Rabies Control Officers are required to be on-call in a rotating schedule to handle calls dealing with an actual animal bite of a human being, an injured domestic animal, or request from a public safety officer. Responsible for completion and final disposition of investigations and reports on all “dangerous or potentially dangerous dogs” when complaints are filed against the dog’s owner. Reports to the Animal Control Program Manager.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Respond to citizen’s request concerning a variety of animal problems and complaints by phone or on site visits.Set and maintain animal traps used to capture stray, unwanted, and/or wild dogs and cats.Notify owners and general public of the need to have dogs and cats vaccinated against rabies.Arrange quarantine when it has been reported of a dog or cat biting a person.Investigate all dangerous or potentially dangerous dog investigations as well as nuisance complaints.Collect, pack, and ship specimens of animals (domestic and wild) suspected of having rabies to the NC Department of Environment, Health and Natural Resources Laboratory for analysis and confirmation.Put animals to sleep if injured, ill, or unwanted.Respond to calls concerning wildlife animals acting strange or incoherent, especially foxes and raccoons.Take veterinarians supplies and pick up certificates and checks.Operates and manages all shelter operations on weekends and holidays with no on-site supervision.Attends annually a animal cruelty investigators course and investigates animal neglect/cruelty complaints as assigned and takes necessary action including issuing of citations and possible court action.ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONSPerforms other related work as required.
